Edwin Bufflap and Hector Lupton, purchased the present Her ald building which was own ed by Dr. W. A. Leggett. Considerable alterations were made to the building an a new press and typesetting machine were purchased. The office of the Edenton Merchants Association, which was -located in Hotel Joseph Hewp, rent free by G. H. was moved to the Citizens Bank Building. Jafties R. Maus of Greens boro' was employed as foot ball coach at Edenton High School. ■ He succeeded David Holton, Who resigned to en ter the hardware business. According to a financial statement made by M. IF. Bond, Jr., secretary of the Chowan County ABC Board, a total of $28,000 had been turned over to the county since the liquor Store opened in September, 1937. Edenton had a new business when Floyd M. Cox of Wash ington, N. C., opened a groc ery store on South Broad Street in the building form erly occupied by E. C. Alex ander, Singer sewing machine agent, and C. LaiMontagne, a sign painter. In the course of remodeling the old Masonic room in the Court House, many old relics were found when the (master’s steps were removed. D. M. Warren, chairman of the County Commissioners, reported that a contract had been awarded to place a new roof on the Court House. The roof was to be of asbestos shingles similar to the roof ing used on the restored buildings at Williamsburg, Va. Chowan Tribe of Red Men sponsored a wrestling match in the Edenton anmory. Work was started on a wpA u; project to improve I Edenton’s water mains by re placing 8-inch lines instead of 4-inch on Water and Gran ville Streets. John A. Holmes was in stalled as commander of Ed Bond Post of the American Legion and Mrs. J. L. Chest nutt was installed president of the Legion Auxiliary. Mrs. M. L. Hoffler was elected president of tile Cho wan County Council of Farm Women. A federal shad survey was in progress in Edenton to as certain, if possible, the rea- the shortage of shad. Representatives of the Bu reau of Fisheries were mak ing tests of waters in the va rious adjacent Albemarle streams to learn if there had been pollution sufficient to be d detriment to the shad. Millard F. Bond, Jr., was elected vice president of the State ABC Board. Chowan Woman’s Club held an all-day picnic at Chowan High School. A special fea ture of the event was two baseball games. Mrs. Vernon Moore passed away at her home on North Broad Street. Rep. With rain every day for about a week, crops in Cho wan County were damaged to a considerable extent Mrs. Dorothy M. Ballenger, free lance writer, lecturer, teacher and radio speaker, gave a lecture on "Give Me Guam” at a meeting of the Edenton Business and Profes sional Women’s Club. Mrs. Ballenger spent two years in Guam. Fire Chief R. K. Hall pre cented a resolution to Town Council calling for change of policy in answering calls to fires outside the city limits. The resolution provided for a charge to be made beyond the city limits but Town Council took no action on the matter. Rev. Levi S. Beiler, pastor of the Assembly of God Church, tendered his resigna tion to minister in a new field at Lynchburg, Va. J. N. Pruden tendered his resignation as town attorney but Town Council declined, to accept his resignation and ex pressed the hope that he would continue in the same capacity. Continuing their efforts to erect a memorial to Chowan County’s war dead, a delega tion of VIFW members ap peared before Town Council with a resolution requesting release of a fund of SI,OOO which was appropriated joint ly for the purpose several years before by Town Coun cil and the County Commis sioners. Town Council granted per mission to the Coastland.Oil Company to erect a 20,000- gallon tank for storage of gasoline on Coke Avenue. Mr. and Mrs. P. H. BeU celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary when Mrs. W. W. Robertson of Plymouth en tertained at the Bell home in Pembroke Circle. Joseph L. Collins, 72, died at his home on North Broad Street as the result of a heart attack. Horace White was installed as sachem of Chowan Tribe of Red Men. Mrs. Marguerite Wilson Ev ans, 51, died at her home near Edenton after a long lllne—. Johnny Bohonko, (flashy second baseman of the Eden ton Colonials, according to newspaper clippings, was making a very good showing with the Spencer, lowa, base ball team. Mrs. Jeanne O’Neal was in stalled as Pocahontas of Cho wanoke Council No. 54. Miss Gene Bunch Collins and Albert Cullipher were united in marriage at the home of the bride’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Bunch. Miss Clara Ann Dixon and Wallace Reed Peele were united in marriaga at the home of Rev. Ed Gordon.
