4 SECTION B Duke Looks To Chesson For Big Football Plays DURHAM Although Duke has one of the top receivers in the Atlantic Coast Confer ence returning for the 1970 season in Wes Chesson, the Blue Devils’ receiving corps lacks the depth they have en joyed in the past. The Blue Devils lost tight end Jim Dearth and flanker Marcel Courtillet via gradua tion and return only two let termen in the vital receiving area. Chesson, a 6-2, 190-pounder from Edentoif? already holds the career yards receiving record for the Blue Devils with 1,319 yards. In two seasons, the speedy receiver has caught 90 passes for five touchdowns. Last season • Chesson was the fourth leading receiver in the ACC, and he is the top returning end in the confer ence for the 1970 campaign. In his first game as a flank er in 1968, he set a Duke and ACC record by grabbing 11 passes for .176 yards. Behind Chesson at split end is L. G. Bryant, a 6-1, 183- pounder from Chatham, Va., and Hank Fletcher, a 6-1, 180- pounder from Chesapeake, Va. “We are somewhat weaker in the receiving area than last season,” added Harp. “Our newcomers will have to develop quickly. Food Stamp Business Is Brisk Here Chowan County ■ Depart ment of Social Services re ports participation in the food stamp program con tinued brisk in July, a month in which those certified usu ally drops. There were 132 families certified during the month. Robert Hendrix, director, reported to county commis sioners last Monday that 144 participated, paying $4,717.50 and receiving stamps valued at $14,656. Hendrix said during the month the department had 518 cases in which financial assistance and/or service was rendered. Other aspects of the de partment activities included: Aid to Aged: 93 cases, $4,820 grant, $51.82 average. Aid to Dependent Children: 71 cases, $6,443 grant, $21.99 average. Aid to Disabled: 42 cases, $2,283 grant, $54.40 average. Aid to Blind: 13 cases, S7OB grant, $54.56 average.
