SECTIONC It’s Garden Time By M. E. Gardner Beneficiary ®«*t. at Hartknltarsl Science M. C. BUte University / There are many types of containers that may be used for growing house plants— clay, plastic and metal. Per haps the day containers are best because they are porous and'permit some air exchange which supplies oxygen for the roots. Due to the porous na ture of the clay, more fre quent watering is necessary as compared with either plas tic or metal pots. Rrdad St. Phone 482-2477 Edenton, N. C. THE CHOWAN HERALD tainer used, it is essential that bottom drainage be pro vided. This can be done by placing a piece of broken clay pot over the drainage hole and a thin layer of coarse gravel over the entire bottom area. 1 would not recommend the use of any type container that does not have an opening for bottom drainage. There is no set schedule that can be recommended for watering plants. The amount and frequency of watering will depend upon size arid kind of plant, type of con tainer used and stage of growth. When watering, soak the soil well and then let the soil become dry-to-touch before watering again. As a general rule, most soils will become lighter in color .as they dry but a soil high in organic matter may be deceptive in this respect. Never let your plants wilt for lack of water. Various types of self-water ing devices may be used— wicks in the bottom of a pot, ietc. If you have used self watering devices, successful ly, I would not suggest that you change. However, I ex pect that, for most people surface watering is the better plan. When watering such plants as African violets, [cyclaman and gloxinia avoid I getting water in the crowns of the plant as it may cause rotting. The temperature of the water is important. Water used should be at room tem perature and preferably ap plied in the morning. Ilf you want to catch and store rain j water for your plants this may be done. However, we have no evidence that chlor ine and fluorine treated wa ter is injurious to plants. Edenton, North Carolina, Thursday, August 27, 1970 and Check Move Together Moving socn? There al ways seems to be a hundred and one things to do when you’re getting ready to move. And one of the things to remember, if you’re a social security beneficiary, is to notify the Social Security Administration of your new address. It’s an easy enough thing to do. Just call or write your social security office. The people there will need to know your social security number, yottr complete old address (including the ZIP code) and the new address and ZIP code. Do this promptly to make certain your monthly benefit checks continue coming to you without delays or inter ruptions. In addition, be sure to notify the post office of your new address. More than $233 billion has been paid in social security benefits since 1940.
