Peanuts in Chowan County on the whole lcok good, even / though there are problems with red spider in some places and com ear worms Siting the foliage. The corn ear worms are also present in soybeans. A good appli cation of insecticide usually gives control to the ear worm in the case of red spider, dust ing with either Ethion or Sul m.r will give some control. In the case of the corn— we are suggesting that you harvest your corn as fast as possible, even though the moisture may be higher than you like to pick it. If you are storing the corn, we urge you to dry it down to about 14 per cent moisture so that if there is some toxin in the blight, it will not grow at this moisture probably.' We also urge you to bury the com stalks after harvesting so that the corn stalk borer will not be able to hatch out and there is a good possibility that the disease will not over winter if the stalk is com pletely covered with soil. These are two good reasons to bury the stubble and we would like to see it done on a county-wide basts because it is not near as effective un less everyone follows this practice. Jones Reports From Washington The week ending August 29 saw the U. S. House of Representatives still in the summer recess. During the [recess >1 have had the pleas ure of visiting many parts of jthe Congressional District. I find that our citizens are still gravely concerned as to the school enrollment practices being forced upon them by this administration and the federal courts. Certainly there is no reason or justifi cation in forcing the small children of both races to trav QBdfcTyfer Os Edenton BRING US YOUR FILM FOR PROMPT PROCESSING el great distances merely to achieve some hypothetical numerical degree of integra tion. In spite of Attorney General MitdheH’s advocation of the ‘‘neighborhood con cept,” the practices of the Department of Justice and HEW are quite different and belie the promises and state ments cf many in high places of this administration. Friday, August 28, I had the pleasure of greeting the Am bassador from Great Britain, the Honorable John Freeman, ■ and welcoming him to the First District at which time he made an official visit to Dare County to view ‘The Lost Colony” pageant, and 1 later to visit Ocracoke Island and the graves of the British : sailors who were killed off the North Carolina coast dur in -the Second World War. The Ambassador was high in his praise of the “Outer Banks.” More and more this section of our state is becom ing a major tourist attrac attraction. Our office in Washington has directed sev eral members of Congress and their families to the eastern shore of the First District for vacations, all of whom have I been very lavish in their praise. Certainly for the Frist District, as well as all North Carolina, tourism is becoming a major industry. Congress will finish this summer recess on September 8 with no prediction in sight as of now as to the final date I of the sine die adjournment. Isaac “turned the other 1 cheek” towards his enemies. This —if we are completely honest with ourselves—is not always the easiest thing to do.
