Hawk or Dove?
It's that time of year when the Hawks
declare war on the doves. The Hawks,
of course, are the many hunters in
our area.
Oddly enough, about this time of year,
your telephone service may be inter
rupted temporarily, due to aerial lines
and cables which have been severed by
shotgun pellets or rifle slugs ...
We hope every hunter will be lucky
enough to get his bag limit everytime
he goes out But, please fellows, don't
shoot that bird sitting on a telephone
cable!
Be a sport, and let just one get by your...
the folks who use our telephones will
appreciate it—

this year by Patricia Parrish.
The journalism class is striv
ing for complete and accur
ate school news coverage
while learning the technique
of modern journalism. The
second edition, planned for
October 29, will spotlight
some creative writing done by
Holmes students.
Due to lack of uniforms,
the Holmes High flag corps
has been kept from marching
and participating in activities
with the band, but hopes arc
still high that Hie uniforms
will be in before football sea
son is over.
Miss Barnhill along with
co-captains, JoAnn Wheeler
and Janice Riddick, have been
practicing with the other girls
of the group so that they will
be ready to go when the uni
forms do come.
Each month the Tri-Hi-Y
posts a quote throughout the
corridors and rooms of the
school. Currently, “He alone
has lost the art to live who
cannot win new friends,”
means we hope you will be a
friend of this column, too.

Cancer Crusade
Bill Norvell, Chowan Coun
ty Cancer Crusade Chairman,
will lead Chowan County in
the 1970 educational and fund
raising Crusade of the Amer
ican Cancer Society beginning
in October.
“We’re out to tell people
that it’s what they don’t know
about cancer that can hurt.
We mean to instruct them in
personal ways of protecting
themselves against cancer,” he
I said.
' The emphasis is on action
■ in the 1970 Crusade.
I Volunteers in Chowan Coun
ty will be marshalled to bring
home the message "Fight
Cancer with a Checkup and
a Check”.
The crusade has a triple
aim this October. First, to
encourage every member of
the community to have a reg
ular health checkup, including
cancer tests.
Second, to teach people pro
tective measures against can
cer. By that is meant per
sonal action, for example, the
use of caution in the sun to
avoid skin cancer. Another
example is quite famous—an
end to cigarette smoking to
prevent most lung’cancer.
Third, to raise the money
to support vital ACS pro
grams of research, education
and service to cancer patients.
“We look to the laboratories
for the final solution to the
cancer problem,” Mr. Norvell
said. “Today there are 1.5
: million Americans alive and
cured of cancer. What tomor
row may bring depends on
the imagination and expertise
of scientists and the support
of us aIL”
