Holmes Highlights : Since the middle of sum* pier, the varsity cheerleaders have been raising money to buy new wool uniforms. Sponsoring a car wash, rum mage sales, individual bake sales and the sale of spirit ribbons hag almost completed the fund-raising. In a formal, candlelight ceremony, the Officers of the Edenton Chapter of the Dis tributive Education Clubs of America were installed last week. Mike Butler assumed the duties of president; Terry Sartain, vice president; Cath erine Butler, secretary-treas urer, and Beverly Whitehurst, parliamentarian and chap lain. Horace Robertson, the DE coordinator from Greenville, performed the installation. DjECA is the newest club on ibe Holmes High campus and is sponsored by Marcus Mc- Clanahan. This year the Edentonian is supervised by their new editor, Bob Jordan, with Mrs. Byrum, Miss Cherry and Mrs. McClanahan as advisers. The staff, along with the junior editor, Elaine Burke, has been leaking progress toward com pletion of layout. School pic tures were made this week, and plans for the yearbook subscription campaign is un derway. : Starting this year you will hot be seeing as much of the (driver’s education cars. The journalism class is striv ing for complete and accur ate school news coverage while learning the technique of modern journalism. The second edition, planned for October 29, will spotlight some creative writing done by Holmes students. Due to lack of uniforms, the Holmes High flag corps has been kept from marching and participating in activities with the band, but hopes arc still high that Hie uniforms will be in before football sea son is over. Miss Barnhill along with co-captains, JoAnn Wheeler and Janice Riddick, have been practicing with the other girls of the group so that they will be ready to go when the uni forms do come. Each month the Tri-Hi-Y posts a quote throughout the corridors and rooms of the school. Currently, “He alone has lost the art to live who cannot win new friends,” means we hope you will be a friend of this column, too. Norvell Pushes Cancer Crusade Bill Norvell, Chowan Coun ty Cancer Crusade Chairman, will lead Chowan County in the 1970 educational and fund raising Crusade of the Amer ican Cancer Society beginning in October. “We’re out to tell people that it’s what they don’t know about cancer that can hurt. We mean to instruct them in personal ways of protecting themselves against cancer,” he I said. ' The emphasis is on action ■ in the 1970 Crusade. I Volunteers in Chowan Coun ty will be marshalled to bring home the message "Fight Cancer with a Checkup and a Check”. The crusade has a triple aim this October. First, to encourage every member of the community to have a reg ular health checkup, including cancer tests. Second, to teach people pro tective measures against can cer. By that is meant per sonal action, for example, the use of caution in the sun to avoid skin cancer. Another example is quite famous—an end to cigarette smoking to prevent most lung’cancer. Third, to raise the money to support vital ACS pro grams of research, education and service to cancer patients. “We look to the laboratories for the final solution to the cancer problem,” Mr. Norvell said. “Today there are 1.5 : million Americans alive and cured of cancer.
