[ At last count, 15 units were lined up : for the parade with 37 firemen from out : of-town scheduled to attend. Jhe equip ment will be on display at the fire sta tion immediately following the parade. Mrs. Mary Eliza (White) Wilkins, a na tive Edentonian now living in Suffolk, Va., was among the many who renewed a sub scription to The Chowan Herald last week. With her check, Mrs. Wilkins had this to say: “Dear Mr. Bufflap—Enclosed is check for the renewal of The Chowan Herald. This is somewhat of a tradition in my fam ily, as my mother started this years ago as a birthday gift which I received every week for a whole year. What a wonderful way to be remembered! Since the passing of both my mother and father (Mr. and Mrs. J. Frank White), I don’t get down there too often but I still enjoy reading about the home town. Hope this finds your wife much improved and back in the swing of things. My best regards to you both.” - o It will not be long now until the No vember 3 election, so 'that all who wish to cast a ballot in the election should make sure their names are on the proper regis tration books. This, of course, affects those voters who have moved from one precinct to another since they last voted—and those who have become old enough to vote. It also applies to those who have moved to Edenton and have resided here long enough to vote. So, don’t wait until you go to the polls on November 3 and find out that you are not entitled to vote in that precinct— and it will be too late to qualify in 'any other precinct. lo Due to chasing back and forth from Chowan Hospital and Bud Amburn crowded with news this week, this column must of necessity be very short this week. A re port from the hospital is that the Missus had some bad days this week, but as of Wednesday at noon she was feeling some what better and was far more cheerful than during the previous days of the week. M WLM hi Wayne Ashley Ashley Promoted JACKSONVILLE Wayne Ashley on Tuesday morning was promoted to assistant manager of the Edenton branch of First National Bank of Eastern North Carolina, through action of the system’s central board of directors. The announcement was made jointly by J. Hugh Rich, president of the slls - system which has 37 branches in 23 cities, and Jack Harris, vice presi dent and manager of the Edenton office. The action was taken at a meeting of the system's central board of directors. Ashley joined First National last year and has served as loan officer of the Edenton branch since that time. Prior to joining First National he served sev eral years with the Edenton Savings & Loan Association and also was treasurer of Fred Webb’s Grain Company irt Greenville. He is a graduate of John A. Holmes High School and received his higher edu cation at High Point College. He and his wife Ingred have two daughters and are members of Mace donia Baptist Church. Pm Escapes Serious Injury In Crash . Big Day Set For Hospital On Sunday; Rates Approved Continued from Page 1 the new hospital, a supportive plan also was being developed for the present hos pital and Convalescent Unit to develop a total health care delivery system. These plans are being culminated with the opening of the new hospital. The health care delivery system in Chowan County will include a method of caring for patients according to their physical, nursing and medical require ments. The new hospital will house in tensive care and acute care facilities and staff. The present hospital will have facilities and staff to care for those per sons with less acute needs. The present Convalescent Unit will have facilities and staff to case for patients who are es sentially able to be up and require only limited nursing and medical attention — basically those nearly ready to be dis charged. This is one of the only hospital-health care facilities in the entire area including the state of North Carolina, that can ren der this varied a level of care under the same administration, nursing and medical staff. What does this mean to the individual requiring hospitalization? It means that if a patient requires more than the aver age stay for hospitalization, for exam ple—more than seven to 10 days his physician along with the nursing staff and the patient can decide and elect to use the level of care required for his condition. A patient who may require 30 days of hospitalization could, upon his physician’s order, be cared for in the intensive care and acute care units of the new hospital, be transferred to the present hospital for less acute care, then to the present Convalescent Unit for the final stage of hospitalization. If this plan were followed, the patient would end up paying between S2OO and S3OO less for his period of hospitalization than he currently has to pay in the present hospital. This plan lias been carefully consider ed and budgetary requirements calculat ed to establish a rate structure for the three units of Chowan Hospital to give the greatest benefit to all patients re quiring hospitalization. The Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees, at a meeting this week, established the fol lowing rate structure: A. Intensive Care and Coronary Care Units SBO per day. B. Private Beds - New Hospital - S3B per day (additional $1 per day for shower). C. Semi-private Beds - New Hospital $33 per day. D. Fediatric Beds - New Hospital - Light Plane Crash A fire in Windsor Woods was ignited Sunday when an airplane piloted by H. Allen Corbin, 25, of Voorheesville, N. Y., stationed at the Norfolk Naval Station, attempted to make a landing at Eden ton Municipal Airport. About three minutes from landing, a radio call from the pilot was made to the Edenton air control but the pilot was not heard from since. Approximately 45 minutes later George Lewis was running his dogs at the air port when he saw the plane on its nose. Lewis then went to see if he could assist the pilot and the pilot was com plaining of back injuries and had facial cuts. Lewis took the pilot to the airport and from there Jimmy Ricks took Cor bin to Chowan County Hospital where he was later transferred to Norfolk af ter being examined by Dr. Richard Hardin. As Corbin came in for the landing he was too low and hit a power line that caused a pole to break igniting the fire, it was learned. At the time of the fire, no one knew what was the cause.
