Sewing without needle or thread, the Ultrasonic Sewing Machine can be used to hem, tack base, pleat, seam, slit and but tonhole. Developed by Branson Sonic Power Company, of Danbury, Connecticut, this high-technology product limits its present applica tion to industrial markets. The new technique sews by welding together synthetic materials with ultrasonic (high frequency) vibra tions. The vibrations gen erate localized heat by causing one piece of ma terial to vibrate against the other, creating a mo lecular change which joins —or “sews” —the pieces together. m CHOWAN HRRALD, KDKNTON, NORTH CAROLINA, THURSDAY, IIHTW ■ «, UNk | rM Py?" Community programs are needed badly, she points out The big problem area is lack of professional guidance. North Carolina has four in stitutions with a total of 5,000 beds. It is estimated that there are more than 150,000 retarded children in this state—some 300 of them probably in Chowan County. Many of those in institutions could return home if services were available, thereby mak ing space available for those now in the community who should be in an institution PAGE SEVEN-A but cannot because of lack of space. New programs to be con sidered are work activity centers, adult activity centers and day care centers tor all ages. “These programs must be established in order for our communities to provide positive alternatives to resi dential care,” she states.
