writing that his current de
ferment be cancelled.
This change in policy should
be of particular interest, he
said ,to selective service regi
strants who hold 1970 lottery
numbers higher than the high
est number reached by the
board. As of November 5, he
stated that the highest lottery
number reached by this local
board is 164.
“It is not anticipated," El
liott added, “that this local
board will exceed number 164
as a high for this calendar
year; therefore, it will proba
bly be to the advantage for a
registrant who holds a 1970
lottery number, and who is
currently deferred in 11-S,
I-S(H), I-S(C), 11-A, 111-A
(Hardship), or 111-A (Father
hood), to request the board
to cancel his deferment if he
has a lottery number higher
than 164".
Elliott further pointed out
that if such a request is re
ceived by the board from such
a registrant, he will be re
classified in I-A . This action
wiU. permit the registrant to
be placed in a lower draft
priority during 1971.

Popes Store
Plans Big Sale
Popes Store in Edenton
will join the other 59 stores
in the popular and rapidly
growing variety chain in the
two Carolinas in celebrating
its 39th anniversary with a
mammoth sale expected to
draw thousands of people.
Plans for the chain-wide
birthday celebration were
announced today by Gladys
Griffin, manager of the local
Popes store.
The sales event at the
Popes stores will continue
through Saturday, November
14th.
“This isn’t just another
sale,” declared Gladys Griffin.
“It is an event designed to
show our appreciation to the
loyal customers for their con
tinued patronage which has
helped the Popes Stores to
become one of. the largest
variety chains in the 'South.”
The local manager pointed
out that outstanding values
will be offered in every de
partment.
“We aren’t offering shop
worn merchandise or trying
to unload excess items,” she
pointed - out. “Our buyers
have been on the market for
months buying top-quality
merchandise especially for
this anniversary sale.”
Because of its enormous
buying power for 60 differ
ent stores, Popes buys in big
quantities for less and is,
therefore, able to sell for less,
it was pointed out.
Head of the growing chain
of Popes Stores is John W.
Pope of 'Raleigh, a dynamic
and aggressive young mer
chandiser and one of the top
merchants in North Carolina
and the Southeast.
