Each and everyone of the girls is a leader in school ac tivities. They are friendly and cooperative. Each girl enjoys cheering. They cheer in such away that they show they believe that they represent the best school around. Bulldogs Whether on the court, in a game or in practice, the word for the Bulldogs is hustle. Even though they lost their first two games, they dis played awesome power on the boards and on the fast breaks. Glenn Riddick, one of the tri-captains, was chosen All- East Tidewater • Conference last year. Winston Rountree, another captain, playing center, jumps up as high as anyone. Henry Hinton, last of th e three captains, has played all four years of high school and is the playmaker. The starting lineup is com pleted with (Paul White and Waverly Westbrook, both juniors. This week they play Gates County two times with re venge on their minds. Last year Gates beat Chowan twice by three points and by five points. ’ They plan a few surprises l this year for the Gacos. The team is very optimistic about the season. With a few breaks, they are going to be i tough to contend with. BuHdogettes The Bulldogettes pose some what of a problem to Coach ! Harry Land this year in that ; eight or nine of the squad are so near in ability, a . starting lineup is tough to . select. First there is Patricia Per ry. No problem there. Pa tricia, a rover, is an All- Conference performer and makes the team go. Her de sire and hustle are an in spiration to coach and team. This was attested to when the girls selected her as a tri captain. Then we have Rhonda Ev ans, again a tri-captain, whose quiet determination is ad mired by all the Bulldogettes. Rhonda starts at either for ward or guard. Then there is Sheila By rum, a sophomore rover, who has all the moves. Moves that most girls haven’t even dreamed of yet. Again, no problem, she will play some where. And we have Charlotte Layton, an outstanding leap er for a girl. We have to find a place for her also. Here the problem begins. Carleen Goodwin, another sophomore, and starter in the first game, is displaying out standing potential thus far this season. But right here and probab ly the single most outstand- PLENTY TO BE THANKFUL FOR By Nancy Hare Put your senses to work, Look so that you won’t miss | The blazing colors of the I trees, I People full of thanks and bliss. i The trees look like they’re on fire. FOR QUICK RESULTS TRY HERALD CLASSIFIED ADS THE CHOWAN HERALD ing hustler at the guard is Gwen Ward. A girl with the 110 per cent attitude, a possible starter as well. We also have a problem at guard where our senior tri captain and first game start er, Marie Chappell, is being pushed by a freshman sur prise, Belinda Byrum. Both will see plenty of action. Also, there is Vickie Leary. She, too, was a first game starter and is improving daily. “Vickie has improved, greatly this year and is a pleasant surprise,” said Coach Land. And waiting in the wings should any of these girls fall off are Susan Jordan, her sister Joan, Lou Ann Bass, Gail Harrell, Joan Hare and Cindy Ward. Miss Hare, in particular, has been looking good late ly and has the quickest re lease on the team. The season is still a mys tery; the girls are young and inexperienced but their po tential may blossom early and if so it will be all roses in Bulldog country. Thanksgiving Convention Thanksgiving Day through Saturday I will be attending the NSPA 50th anniversary press conference at the Pal mer House Hotel in Chicago. My goal is to take all the classes available for a col umnist, then I can keep you better informed about the happenings at Chowan High School.
