THE CHOWAN HERALD HOME FIRES BURNING By MARY UXZK LANE ~ Put on your coats and over shoes,' Winter is coming, that’s bad news. r You need a scarf and a handkerchief, too, Well have colds and probably the flu. There'll be nights we can’t sleep, Because a fever we will keep. There’s disease in all the land, It don’t exempt any cnan. Every year that passes by, Winters seem harder, I don’t know why, I guess our years have got us down, We must brace up and try no frown. We’U have to close our window and our door. And keep the home fires burning, that’s for sure. We know the frost is coming soon, I’d so much rather see the flowers bloom. Now the .fields are really bare. But the birds don’t seem to care. They’ll be cared for anyway. Just remember what the Scriptures say. Yes, the days will be short and cold. But the young is strong and very bold. They’re not afraid of sleet and snow. They haven’t lived long enough to really know. When they slide down, up they come, Because they’re limber and very young. But soon the years will bring them down. And all they can do is sit around. Try to make the best of every day As you travel down life’s way. You can’t call back the past, you know. So take the advantage of days as you go. Yes, everyone has been young. This has been ever since time first begun. We’re first a bud and then a bloom, But age crept up on us very soon. So take a survey every day Os what you do and what you say. And be prepared day or night. If God should call us, what would be our plight? “SPEED IT UP.
