Senator Jordan Reports From Washington WASHINGTON Senator B. Everett Jordan (D-NC) said Wednesday he has “def inite assurance” that the Federal Water Quality Ad ministration does not consider current pollution factors in the Cape Fear Basin grounds for delaying construction of the New Hope Dam. Jordan disclosed that after a discussion with J. Gary Gardner, FWQA regional op erations director, of an in terim report issued by the agency in mid-November on water samplings taken in the area. He quoted Gardner as say ing that the samplings did no cnore than confirm the con tinued existence of algae prcducing factors of which his agency, the Army Corps of Engineers and the North Carolina Department of Wa ter and Air Resources had been aware for the past sev eral years. Gardner also said, Jordan reported, that “we do not anticipate there will be any long-range problem” that Z 1 /mHS Epr* H In, tkb is Mr Mth Ainlrmtrr and J N we lure the largest Inrenlor; of merchandise rnrurmi IU/- \QL hare been marked down to rock koUom price* /VASSbJSSbIA JOWH for this great event: invite joa 10 come early and choose front our greateat selec* ■ tions. Gardner further explained, Jordan said, that the samp ling upon which the Novem ber report was based was ktken during “a very low flow period” and therefore reflected a higher pollution factor than would otherwise have been -the case and which will be taken into ac count when a third sampling is made next January. Jordan said he checked with Gardner because of a “deep concern” over the er roneous impression which had gained wide circulation in the state as a result of the in terim report. The information regarding the sampling was covered in a November 19 letter from Gardner to the Wilmington District Army Engineer, with a copy to the North Carolina Department of Water and Air Resources. It was intended, according to Gardner, simply as advis ory information on the pro gress of the FWQA’s pre impoundment study of the project and not in any sense to raise new questions about the. project. “I am glad to get this mat ter clarified,” Jordan assert ed, ‘because I regard the New Hope development as completely sound and one that is vitally important to the future of (North Carolina. I have full confidence that it will meet every need for which it was designed.” Jordan made it clear in that connection that he will work closely with all agen cies in their efforts to elim inate any pollution factors during the construction per iod. “As a member of the Sen ate Public Works Committee I have helped draft and have supported every measure de vised there to deal with wa ter and air pollution, solid waste disposal and environ mental protection. ‘T want the New Hope project to be pollution-free and I think it can be. “I am just as intent on seeing that it is carried to completion and I think it would be a terrible tragedy for its progress to be in terrupted without any valid cause.” CHOIR TO PERFORM The Adult Choir of Rocky Hock Baptist Church will present John Peterson’s “Night of Miracles” Sunday at 7 P. M. The choir is di rected by Jack Evans, church music director. The public is cordially invited to attend.
