As to Fundamentalists and Modern ists, be neither one. The Salvation of God is not a doctrine but a Person. This Christ Person can save the meanest man in the county. The only reason He has not done it is that person has not surrendered to Him. All denominations belong to Me. I allowed one of them to Rave My name but I want all of thcim to have Me. The bigger a man gets the harder it |S to tell what denomina tion he is connected with. As to the race question, "The first of all commands is “thtju rhalt love.” At the Judgment Day the black man is £)ing to turn pale and the white man red if they find too; late that they hate each other. There has been some controversy in the past be tween those who say that population pressures were the basic cause of a number of small wars, and others who say that population growth really had little to do with any given war. Perhaps it is a question of the degree of influence population growth has rather than its being the only cause of a war. Over a period of 30 or 40 years some 300,000 Salvadorans had crossed the border into neighboring Honduras lock ing for jobs and farmland. It was a natural migration in that Honduras was much less “crowded.” Efforts by Hon durans to remove the Salva dorans from their land and deny them ownership rights led to the conflict We do not know whether this type of problem will arise elsewhere in the future. Take heed therefore how ye hear.”—!Luke 8:17-16. Lesson Text: Isaiah 6:9-10; Matthew 13:1-30, 34-43. Today’s lesson marks the occasion of a brand New Year, and our opportunity to do with it what we will. Let us hope that as it pursues its course, the mark it leaves on our lives will be the mark of Christian maturity. To this end this lesson is concerned with the parable—and with Christ’s use of it within the confines of His teaching. He used parables when He conversed with the people much as a carpenter uses his tools; He used them to shape their thinking, to stimulate their interest, to give them a “slide rule” with which to govern their lives and actions. Today, they are just as valu able to us. For Christ, and for His listeners, the parable linked the familiar, known things with the un familiar intangibles; they stirred their interest, and stimulated thought. For the parables had to be interpreted and used as a measuring stick against a varied array of circumstances. This was particularly important, since Christ dealt with intangibles. Sensitive, wise, understanding, His eyes saw what others could not; His ears heard nuances which were denied to ordinary people. Through close association with Christ, the Apostles were more finely attuned to His thinking; not so the multitudes. Average, hard working and realistic people, they had to be reached through the medium they most readily understood—basic situations with which they could realistically relate. Thus, we find Jesus’ parables couched in terms of fishermen and farmer . . . Perhaps in the fact that the Apostles were more attuned to Christ’s reasoning than the multitudes there is a lesson for us, present-day Disciples of Christ. M:st assuredly a sense of close kinship with God breeds an intensified awareness of His goodness, His purpose, His all-encompassing love, just as the twelve Disciples were more acutely attuned to Christ’s intentions than those outside that select circle. Christ, during His short sojourn among men, tailored the dosage of knowledge to the indivi dual capacity to absorb and analyze that knowl edge. And comprehension of the truth is still largely a matter of personal enterprise, c£ per sonal novation. The more intimately we in volve ourselves in Christ, the more adequately we align ourselves with the understanding of spiritual truth. To be so blessed we need to exercise both obedience and self-discipline. The two cannot be separated. Indeed, they combine to make on e of the most rigorous lessons man has to team- if) his throughout' life- How- Concluded on Page 5 ffief/c Tyfer Your Happy Shopping Store W. E.
