The first few questions were especi ally dear to my heart because I am a firm believer in the usefulness of these habits. How many parents of pre school children can answer “Yes” to these questions: —I sing and recite nursery songs and rhymes to my child and have done so since he was an infant. —J read something (news paper, magazine, book) every day. Every day my child sees me getting pleasure and information from reading. —I have a library card, the best of all credit cards. —>l take my child to the Owl Hoots and Screechos . . By. MRS. NCLUE M. SANDERS Director PeWfrew Regional Library library frequently. —Together we look at children’s books and select some to borrow for reading aloud at home. —•I read aloud to my child at least 15 minutes every day. —I often ask my child to tell me a story or to describe something he has seen or done. —I am on the lookout for story-telling and read-aloud hours at the public library, a church, or elsewhere, and I arrange to take my child or have him taken to them. The Shepard-Pruden Mem orial Library is here to serve all the members of this coun ty—those who already read and those who don’t or can’t. Let us help you make your child ready to read. SCREECHES COMPLEX OPERATION— How would you like to cope with buying books for 77 li brary systems from jobbers who have to deal with sev eral hundred publishers? Or dering the books is just the first step. Then comes clas sifying them (deciding on the number which goes on the spine and determines the book’s location on the shelf) cataloging them '(making the cards that go in the card catalog drawers) and process ing them (marking the num bers, inserting the circulation pocket and covering the jack et with plastic). Then comes the sorting process to make sure each library gets the books they ordered. Last Wednesday, I spent the day in Raleigh at the North Carolina State Library at tending the Advisory Com mittee meeting for the Pro cessing Center which handles the procedures I have de scribed above. Since I am new to the committee, I was given a tour by my class mate from VNC, Judith Sut ton, who is now on the staff of the Processing Center. It is an amazing operation. They handle approximately 150,000 books a year and very .few of them stay on the shelves in the center more than a week or two. The Advisory Committee includes librarians from systems of all sizes— from the Children’s Coordina tor in Charlotte - Mecklenburg County where there are 15 branch libraries, a book bud get of almost $200,000 and an annual circulation of 1 1/3 million books to the head of a county library with one building, less than $3,000 to spend on books and an an nual circulation of 35,000 books. Thus the problems of big, little and in-between li braries were voiced. HOOTS FRIENDS OF LIBRARY— Congratulations to Mrs. Ross Inglis, the new chairman of the Friends of Shepard-Pru den Library. Plans are now being made for numerous ac tivities during National Li brary Week and many more Friends are needed. All libraries in Pettigrew region will be closed March 31 far a staff meeting.
