THE CHOWAN HERALD
Volume XXXVH—No. 19.
Edenton, Chowan County, North Carolina, Thursday, May 27, 1971.

Memorial Day, 1971
Down the corridors of time comes
the memory of brave men—the many
who throughout our nation’s history,
have given their all, sacrificed their
very lives for honor, home and country.
Their acts, their courage and their be
liefs are ever an inspiration.
Those servicemen from along the
Public Parade and throughout North
eastern North Carolina who, in more
recent times, have fought and died in
the cause of freedom are part of this
noble company. On Memorial Day, we
reflect upon their deeds with deep re
spect and lasting gratitude. And
proudly, we salute them.
This red, white and blue page is our
contribution this week to efforts of
Edenton Jaycees to draw attention to
the importance of Memorial Day and
in an effort to rekindle the spirit of
patriotism across the land.
To those who come to meander along
the Public Parade for the first time we
say “Welcome”; to those who are re
turning for a second, third or fourth
time, we say you are showing good
judgment; to those who meander here
be it permanently or regularly, we say
get involved in things such as this
Memorial Weekend Air Festival.
In this diversion from normal journ
alistic practice we illustrate our de
termination to go the second mile, not
being haltered by tradition, etc. But
when it comes to patriotism we are old
fashioned as our forefathers now ap
pear to have been.
We are not ashamed of America. We
still get an unexplainable tickle in our
throat when Old Glory passes by. And
the “Star Spangled Banner” sounds
good to us even when played by the
worse individual musician or group of
musicians.
To those who gave their all—it can
best be expressed by saying a simple:
“You done good!”
