PAGE 2-A Judge Homor Is Back In District Court Here ' Judge Fentress Horner of Elizabeth City followed Hur ricane Ginger into Chowan County, moving swiftly and sternly through a session of District Count. Louis Alexander Valentine, 17-year-old Negro, charged with assault and battery, was sentenced to six months. Later, however, the jurist modified the judgment to sus pended sentence upon pay ment of SIOO fine and costs and medical expenses to the Draft Number 125 Ceiling For 1971 The Selective Service Sys tem has announced that Ran dom Sequence Number 125 would be the ceiling for in duction into the 'military for young men in the 1971 Prime Selection Group—that is, those registrants born in 1951 or earlier who received lottery numbers in 1970 or 1909 and .are available for induction .-during 1971. The Department of 'Defense announced a 10,000 draft call jfor the remaining three months of 1971. Draft Direc tor Dr. Curtis W. Tarr said that Selective Service Local Boards would deliver 6,500 of these men in the period No vember 1-18 and the remain ing 3,500 in the first nine Says of December. Tarr said that he has directed local boards to give at least 30 days notice to all registrants facing the induction process in coming 'months. Current draft regulations require 10 clays notice. • Tarr said that the uniform national cail provision of the hew draft law assures every your.g man in the 1971 group who is 1-A and qualified with a RSN of 125 and below that he will receive an induction notice in ithe near future. Tarr pointed out that some of these wien will enter the Army in January, .February or March c.f next year because of the extended liability pro visions of the selective service regulations. Valentine and four other young Negroes had, been ar rested by Edenton Police De partment following investiga tion of an assault on David Cooke near Hicks Field on September 17. The four charged with aiding and abet ting in assault—Stephan Bon ner, Gerald Blount, Charles Alexander Drew and Willie Drew were all found not guilty. Grady A. Sesscms, charged in two counts of worthless checks, was given a total of seven months on the roads. James Luther Powell, charg ed with second offense c.f drunk driving, was sentenced to six months; driving after his license was revoked, 12 months. Appeal, bond was set at $2,000. Willie Martin Shaw, charg ed with third offense of drunk driving, was sentenced to two years. Appeal bohd was set at $3,000. Other cases called by So licitor Tom Watts included: James Randolph Pledger, failure to comply with sup port payment, six 'months, suspended upon payment of $1,600 by January 5, 1972, and S3O per week for support of his minor children. Vance Douglas Hare, drunk driving, 90 days, suspended upon payment of SIOO fine and costs. Louis Bond, non support, pay $10! per week for support of chilli and court costs; as sault on a female, 30 days, suspended 'upon payment of costs. Engine Courses Slated By COA Two new classes, small en gine repair and outboard mo tor repair, are offered by College of the Albcm/rle j starting this week. Registration and the firs'i class meeting for a email cn-* gine repair course will be held at the COA Vocational Center on Riverside Avenue tcnigt.it .(Thursday) at 7 o'clock. The course content will be a study of two and four cycle one cylinder ga:C line engines an c ] the power I trains. The students will be taught preventive mainten ance, trouble-shooting and repair of the typical auxiliary engines used in industry. Shop periods will emphasize standard routines used in private and industrial appli cations. Registration and the .first class meeting for an outboard motor repair course will be held at the COA Vocational Center on Riverside Avetpue Friday night at 7 o’c’/jck. This is a basic course with the fundamentals of out board motors. Students will be taught the basic parts of the motor, maintenance prac tices and simple repairs. This class will deal only with out board motors. * !
