Page 2-A Jt BOOTS FREE FILMS—One of the Services which the North Carolina State Library fur nishes to the more than 300 public libraries in the state is the free lending of 16 mm films. This activity began in 1852 as an adult film pro ject with emphasis on adult education and entertainment, but between 1966 and 1960 the project was re-evaluated and the focus enlarged. Now there are well over 1,000 films in the collection cover ing hundreds of subjects from adolescence and zoolog ical gardens, of interest to all age groups. The State Library has just published a handsome new catalog which lists, describes and indexes fcy subject all the films in the collection at the begin ning of this year. Since films are constantly being added, it won't be long be fore supplements- will have to be printed. The use of these free films has steadily increased over the years with a total of 16,300 showings to an audi ence of almost half a million people during the past year, 1970-71. ,Os these, 93 films were borrowed by the li braries in the Pettigrew Re gion: 56 by Washington Coun ty Library in Plymouth, 26 by Shepard-Pruden Memorial Library in Edenton, and 11 by Tyrrell County in Colum bia. The total viewing audi ence in the region was 3,550. Most of these film showings were at Library Story Hours, but the figures also include films we borrowed for vari ous groups to use inside and out of the library. SCREECHES TOO POPULAR! One re sult of the increased demand for films from the State Li brary has been to make it harder to get specific titles. Films must be reserved ahead of time, a minimum of three weeks in most cases, and the first choice is not al ways available. Our solu tion to this problem for the story hours is to reserve sev craljiinontb*. in advance but tills tis fbr every user. The other wav to cope with the problem is to re quest a wide range of alter native titles and hope to con nect with one or more. We realize it is disappointing not to get the film you want when you want it. but we know you can understand the reasons.
