Edenton, North Carolina, Thursday, July 20, 1972 Howard Sutton Excels In Speed Races By FLYNN SURRATT Dirt track motorcycle rac ing is a rough world of high speed competition which, it seems, would only be inhabit ed by well seasoned pros. . Such is not the case. Let’s take, for example, 12- year-old Howard Sutton of Edenton who is consistently sliding first place Out from under the name pros such as Ted Yarborough and Dale Cason on Elizabeth City and Virginia tracks. Howard has'been at it for a year and a half. He started on a Honda Trail 70 in the mini-bike class and has since progressed to the lOOcc class. He attributes his success to weight difference and “cor nering.” Howard has the philosophy of slowing into the curve, but blasting out of it. When quizzed about his racing strategy, -he simply replied, “ . , . first off the line and hold inside.” He “likes it all right,” and is currently owner of a Ka waski lOOec “Green Streak” and a 75cc Honda. He is a member of the Am erican Motorcycle Associa tion. Howard stated that he enjoys riding the Honda, but in his opinion, the Kawaski is a better machine. Certain modifications have been made in the Kawaski such as replacing the stand ard seat with a foam rubber cushion so he gets lower on the machine thus cutting down wind resistance which can cause significant speed loss. A lower seat also serves to drop down the center of gravity, an advantage in cor tiering. Howard doesn't t ike chances. He wears appropri ate protective gear such as “leathers” and good helmet. “Leathers” are heavy re enforced jackets and pants which aid in reducing burns and abrasions. In addition, his boots rise high on his calves as added protection to a popu lar racing tactic in which an opponent, desiring the inside of the track, allows his front wheel to spin against hi s competitor’s leg, resulting in a painful friction burn. If the burn becomes intense enough, the cyclist is forced to relinquish his position. The left boot is hceless in order for a special metal hot IN TONKIN GULF USS ORISKANY Nav y Chief .Petty Officer Isaiah Overton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Overton of Route 1, Edenton, is in the Tonkin Gulf aboard the aircraft car rier USS Oriskany along with other ships of the U.
