Page 2-A HOOTS SUMMER FUN—At the be -1 ginning of the summer we . promised the children in the three counties of the Petti : grew Regional Library that : our program would be a “whole, great, big, fun thing.” And I believe we’ve made good on that promise. The libraries have been swarming with children in all kinds of programs—all hav ing a great time. At >the Washington County Library in Plymouth four separate groups have been meeting during the summer under the general supervision of the* energetic “Miss Gretchen” as the children call the young librarian, Gretchen Holz hauer. The high point of the season was reached lust Fri day when the oldest group put on a puppet show for the three younger groups. The performance of the Cinder ella story was well received and enthusiastically ap plauded by the children and the few adults (such as yours truly) who were lucky enough to sneak a peek. We owe a great debt of thanks to the two story-tell ers who have been so faithful for almost two years Mrs. Ada Lee Corrcll and Mrs. Lynn Wheeler. Other com mitments have made it ne cessary for them to discon tinue their regular Friday ap pearances at the Washington County Library but two able replacements have been found so the story hours for pre schoolers will continue throughout the year. Mrs. .Margaret Moore, who met .with the eight and nine-year ■olds this summer for a most (successful program of stories, ■songs and games, will be the jtory-teller lor the morning •group this fall. Mrs. Millie rWomble will be doing the honors on Friday afternoons, with all 3-6 year olds invited to attend the session of their [choice. * A most successful program Was carried out in the Tyrrell fcounly Public Library in Columbia with almost 30 children receiving certificates '-(it achievement in the sum 3bcr reading prograrw.-'Mrs. »lher Davenport, the li brarian, reported that films tjeere very papular with the * < WHERE SHOPPER LOANS j ARE QUICKEST! \NORTH CAROLINA/ | ofl W r^L to oßemembei By MABVIN BASHAM : The story is told of a new and rather awkward • statesman who was having tea with a lady. SCREECHES TAKEN FOR GRANTED— There is always the danger that a privilege is not appre ciated until too late, such as when it is lost; so it is a good idea to stop occasionally and count one’s blessings. In the case of libraries, public rela tions and especially publicity are a vital need. According tc stories I hear at meetings of librarians, in many areas in the state, the libraries have difficulty in getting their stories into the media. This is NOT TRUE here. Not only do the local papers cooperate fully by regularly publishing my column and the weekly new books lists, but they have never refused any spe cial material we have asked to have published. For this, we are truly grateful. The radio stations have also been most cooperative. This was brought to my attention when I was asked to respond to a questionnaire by station WPNC to be submitted to the FCC. It was a great pleas ure to be able -to compliment Ibis station highly for their public service to libraries. And the same ctyi be said for station WCDJ in Edentun. We appreciate their announce- 1 ments lor us and hope that | you will listen for the book mobile schedule, book re views and special announce ments.
