From The Chowan Herald Kitchen By MILDRED HUSKINS One of the many virtues of i hamburgers and meat balls is : that there are so many simple : ways' of varying them with seasoning. No matter how ; often .you serve them they i need never become monoton- ; ous. The use of economical ground beef is a necessity in these , times of very high . food prices and we’re fortun- < ate that the current genera tion often prefers a ham- ; burger to a thick steak. THE CHOWAN HERALD T 1 " 1 New Floating Storage System Halts Oil Spills A new antipollution trans fer and storage pumping sys tem to prevent oil from spill ing, rather than containing or collecting damaging spills after they occur, has been an nounced by Ocean Science and Engineering, Inc., Long Beach, Calif, j The system can be dropped from a cargo plane or heli copter or delivered by an other ship and deploys imme diately, according to William H. Glennon, president. “OSE’s portable pump is then lowered into the stricken , vessel’s tanks and connected to the rubber-nylon container floating along-side,” he con tinued. “Using multiple pumps, up to 20,000 tons or more of oil per day can be pumped from a distressed tanker. cake layers. The cake may be covered with plain whip ped cream or with vanilla flavored frosting. For a pretty garnish for salad or sandwiches cut small sweet gherkins in thin length wise slices from tip almost to end and spread the slices apart like a fan. Drain a can of sardines and mash with a small package of cream cheese and a table spoon or two of minced chives; refrigerate. Serve as a spread for crackers or party rye bread. For interesting scrambled eggs at brunch itime add crisp ly cooked crumbled bacon and drained whole - kernel corn to the egg mixture just before it is set. Saute bananas, cut into one inch chunks, in butter in a large skillet. Add drained canned pineapple chunks and sprinkle with light brown sugar; heat. Delicious served with broiled chicken.
