SANDERS Director Pettit rew Decimal Library HOOTS SATISFYING WEEK —This has been a week full of satis- factory occurrences for me both at work and at home. I received word that Mrs. Louise Darby will be report ing for work at the Shepard ■ Pruden Memorial Library on September 1 and I know she and her family will be wel comed by the community. As librarian for the public II : brary which serves Chowan County, she brings a wealth of experience, the advantage of the latest thinking in pro . fessional education and a varied background rich in ar : chitectural contacts. Another gratifying experi ence was a visit from a mem ber of my family —my first since coming to Plymouth. My sister, Evelyn Koudal, her husband Niels and daughter Karen spent several days with me and I was very proud to show them “my” libraries and “my” part of the country. They accompanied me on my .weekly trip to Edenton (where they look in the sights while I worked) and to Co lumbia where we were guests of the librarian. Esther Dav enport, for a swim and a cook-out. The ladies golf luncheon on Tuesday gave me an opportunity to show my sister the golf course where I spend so many happy hours and a chance to let her meet some of my friends. It was a source of great satisfaction to welcome a new member of the Regional Li brary staff. Mrs. Sheila Fur lough began work last week ( as bookkeeper and clerical as sistant for the region. Her . sunny smile and quiet help fulness are a boon to all of us. j The mail brought me a j monumental satisfaction this , week, the culmination of years of work by my mother . and other relatives. I re- j ceived my copy of the history ( of my family elan, the Me- , Neills, plus biography of my . father, a native of this state. . There were many surprising , facts included. I laughed when Rev. Roberb Holt re marked to the "Washington County Historical Society that his family was on the ‘“wrong” side in both wars—l didn’t know I had the same .skeleton in my closet regard ing the Revolution. SCREECHES FRUSTRATING WEEK For every satisfaction, there was an almost equal frustra tion this week. Wc had hap ed that Mrs. Darby could ar rive in Edenton during Aug ust and she made a valiant effort to hurry things along. I’m sure. Unhappily, there were hitches in her house hunting activities and com plications in arranging for the moving of her belongings from Columbus, Ohio, and from Lexington, Ky., where she’s been attending Library School. It might lake a mir acle for her to make it by September 1. Since it was necessary for j me to be on hand to train our! new assistant, I was unable to take any of my vacation time while my sister was here. Fortunately, my daughter Cyndy was home most of the week and she, with her friend Andy Preston from Chapel Hill, served as guide and chauffeur. The OuU'r Banks were thoroughly covered from the Wright Memorial at Kit ty Hawk to the top of the Hntteras lighthouse, includ ing a performance of The Lost Colony. The most frustrating thing about receiving the family history is the reminder of lost opportunities. As children, we were too impatient to pay attention to Daddy’s stories about his family. By interest was finally kindled when I moved to North Carolina in June, 1960, and began work ing in the North Carolina Room in Pack Library in Asheville. But before I had a chance to ask any questions, my father died, two month'; after I started seaching cen sus records. Geneology can. be a fascinating study but few young people have the pati ence or the interest necessary. Not everyone will appreciate the amount of work my moth er did or even realize the dif ficulty', but I do and I hope she knows how grateful we are, even if she did spell my grandson’s name wrong. Balloons May Deflate Booster Rocket Costs The cost of going up may be coming down for the na tion's Space Shuttle. The idea is to recover and re-use rocket boosters that get space vehicles into orbit. Huge, costly rockets cur rently have only one life, plunging into the sea after performing their mission. But engineers at Goodyear Aerospace Corporation be lieve hot air balloons could be put on board to gently lower the rockets to the surface for recovery. Detailed plans for such a system are being proposed by Goodyear Aerospace to a number of firms working with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration to de velop an operational Space Shuttle by 1980.
