Page 4-B «§ j*r HOOTS SECOND ANNIVERSARY— This is the second annivers ary for this column which I began soon after becoming di rector of the Pettigrew Re gional Library. These two years have been very inter esting ones for me and they have seen a steady growth of services and activities at the three county libraries which form this region. It has been my desire to foster interest in these services and activities by sharing information about books and people. My re marks last year on the occa sion of my first anniversary as a columnist still hold true: writing n column is an en riching experience but, like golf, an humbling one you are never “ahead of the game.” For the benefit of any new Taylor Theatre EDENTON, N. NIIUUK M. eANMBtt readers I may have acquired during the past year, 1 will quote again from my very first column in which I ex plained my by-line and my aim. “Several years ago, the Girl Scouts in my troop gave me the name Gray Owl be cause of my prematurely gray hair and my fondness for owls acquired at Rice Univer sity where the symbol of wis dom is the school mascot. Since my college days, my col lection of owls has grown slowly but steadily, all of them gifts from family and friends—people seem to think of me when they see owls in any form. Thus, when I as sumed the position of director of the Pettigrew Regional Li brary, the idea for this column was born: a chatty visit with the members of this commun ity about books and people but especially about libraries with Hoots for good things and Screeches for the not-so good.” SCREECHES FORGOTTEN MEN—By the great majority of citizens in the Tar Heel State, the in mates of the N. C. Depart ment of Correction are “out of sight and out of mind.” However, I am glad to say that the public libraries of the state arc not guilty of total neglect in this respect. In this region, the bookmo bile has been making regular stops at the Washington Coun ty correctional facility, num ber 3560, for many ~ years. Some of the men have com mented to our faithful and ' competent bookmobile li brarian, Pearl Furlough, that they appreciate our service to them. Several have even reported that they arc faith ful readers of this column. * And now they have published their praise for our effort? in ' their newsletter. A recent * issue contained a very com- * plimentary writeup about the * bookmobile service which s urged the men to take ad- c vantage of b< '-Us to further their cducatior as well as for pleasure rcnrt'i.».
