We have a newspaper that is friendly to the churches, to the schools, ; the hospitals, to the causes of the court, and to the moral atmosphere. This is not due 'to a strained effort but a na tural output by good people. The local hospital is staffed by men who are dedicated to the proposition that people are more than bodies and that a closer conscience is an aid to health. The local pas tors are welcome visitors and arc often called to help ad minister to the patients. They are invited to share every thing but the fees. Tlie local schools of this county and city are managed by people who believe that boys and girls should be pre pared to make a life as well as a living. Teachers are em ployed for what they are as well as what they know. The athletes of our schools are sought after by the colleges. Every church in Edenton has enough gospel preached every Sunday to save every sinner who is a candidate for redemption. d^JCE taTAKER ACCIDENT MAKER NATIONAL FARM JDK SAFETY WEEK JfF JULY 25-31. 1972 jf HHtUffofft I n= funerai home H = edenton, n.c W. A HABIT The Battle For Men’s Minds International Sunday School Lesson for Oct. 1 Lesson Text: "Ephesians 4:11-16; 23-32; Philip pians 4:8-9; II Timothy 4:1-5; James 3:1-12. Throughout the ages man and his intellect have sought ways and means of progressive communication, one with another. In this twen tieth century, with sophisticated electronics, it would seem he has reached the apex of this de sire. As with all things, however, these prestigious developments have their good and bad sides, and one must act with discernment if the bad is to be eliminated and the good kept whole. This lesson, therefore, is intended as an aid in recog nition of these opposing traits, so that the in dividual may reach the right decision regarding attitudes and conduct in the light of the Bible's leaching. At the beginning of Christianity, its tenets were spread by word of mouth. As time pro gressed. because the early Christians were alert to the immense value of the written word, the Books ot the Bib’.c came into being and how fat lunate we are to reap the benefits arising from the foresight of these early scholars. Hotv amazed these early Christians would be were they to be eon Iron it'd with the marvels of the electronic ago in which wc live. How avidly their zealous natures would seize upon the op portunity to spread the Gospel to millions of people in even one short half-hour. And how alert they would be to the danger that accom panies this blessing. For, with the same ease and facility that the true Gospel can be spread through the channels of television and radio, erroneous thinking can penetrate, also, into our homes and therefore into our daily lives. God provided a variety of leaders for the people in the teaching of Christian tenets— apostles, prophets, evangelists, ciders and pas tors. Church laity faithfully follow their call ing today, and gladly use the mass media com munication facilities to “spread the Word." Un fortunately, too, the same media sometimes at tracts charlatans whose false doctrines, clevely disguised, attract the weak and unstable among the public—the Adams and Eves who let them selves be wooed and w r on with misrepresenta. lion. How are we to sort the wheal from the chaff amongst the many cults and “isms" which appar ently have become yo popular today?' 'Perhaps a serious study of the Biblical verses which form the nucleus of our lesson today will clear our minds and set our feet on the t ight path. Throughout the Bible the importance of preach ing is stressed. For Paul, in particular, it was imperative. Seemingly aware ol ms impending demise. Paul wrote his most impassioned letters of en couragement and belief to his young friend, Tim othy. Exhort.' he so id—‘reprove’—‘rebuke.’ And Timothy, to the best of his ability, hid that which his dear friend hade. Today, we need to exhort reprove rebuke. And today, we have powerful weapons to help us achieve these goals. Any housewife and mother can attest to the powers of the family TV set on her household budget and on the minds ot her children. How alert we guardians of the young must he when it comes to properly molding the minds of our offspring! And these days reading and movies must be watched with extra care. There arc good books and good films—but nowadays they seem few and far be tween. Lewdness “sells" and many take advant age of this, in the never-ending chase after the almighty dollar. As sincere Christians and dis criminating parents, how do we combat this trend? The purity of English, the purity of thought, the purity of motivation as exemplified in the teachings of the Bible should be our greatest ally. Responsibility in speaking and' in hearing— these should be our goals in the molding of fu ture Christian lives. Let us resolve, therefore, to turn the great strides that man has made into the paths approved by Christ. This Space Sponsored By A Friend Os The Churches In Chowan County W. E.
