Crossroads Os Aging
By JACQUELINE RICKS
Supervisor
Program on Aging
The senior citizen bazaar at
the Chowan County Fair was
a success. The sale netted
$307.60 for the elderly partici
pants. We are indebted to
the Edward G. Bond Post No.
40, American Legion, and the
fair officials for donating the
booths for the sale.
This was an excellent op
portunity for the public to
become more aware of the
capabilities and talents of the
aged.
The sale was a cooperative
effort of the Program on
Aging, the Agriculture Exten
sion Service, the district
senior citizen clubs and the
Economic Improvement Coun
cil. Mrs. Virginia Oliver,
aged coordinator, and Mis.
Fran Ward, Chowan County
Extension agent, were co
chairmen for the sale.
Another sale is scheduled
October 26, 27 and 20 at the
Southgate Mall in Elizabeth
City. All senior citizens 60
years or older having hand
made items or crafts are in
vited to sell. Anyone inter
ested in selling should con
tact Mrs. Gail Driggers of
Shiloh, aged coordinator, at
326-4256.
In-Home Services
The need for in-home ser
vices to enable the elderly to
remain in their homes is vi
tal. Earlier home health ser
vices provided by depart
ments of health and home
maker services by depart
ments of social services have
been discussed. The health
services arc provided in 57
of the 100 counties in North
Carolina and five counties of
the Albemarle Area. Thirty
three departments of social
services provide homemaker
Services. Os those two are in
the Albemarle. There is a
need for expanding these ser
vices to other counties.
In addition there is a great
need for a variety of in-homc
services, especially as many
elderly live alone. Many
aged in North Carolina live in
rural areas in old houses
which causes additional prob
lems.
Many elderly citizens have
difficulty in getting to a
clinic or doctor's office, to
church or other public places
as the bank, grocery or senior
citizen club meeting. Trans
portation is a most needed
servic’d. In rural areas pub
lic transportation at best is
limited.
To help overcome this
problem efforts arc under
way in Chowan County to set
up free transportation for
persons over 60 years of age
by volunteer services. Rev-
Warren Nancy is chairman of
this group of interested citi
zens, who are working to
eliminate some of the prob
lems in the community. This
group is already operating a
clothing closet with volunteers

and efforts are also underway
to have a food closet. A pro
gram of visitation to the eld

ated.
Efforts have begun to ob
tain volunteer drivers, who
will give a scheduled amount
of time 4.0 provide transpor
tation for the elderly in need
of rides for medical services,
paying bills and buying gro
ceries.
This is most worthwhile
endeavor and it is hoped that
a number of persons will vol
unteer a morning or after
noon at least once a month.
Also that such a program to
help eliminate some of the
transportation difficulties of
the elderly can be established
in each of the counties.

Wildlife Project
Is Described
By BILL MANSFIELD
Center Hill 4-H Club
Creatures that are neither
human nor domesticated,
mammals, birds and fish are
considered as wildlife.
I chose wildlife as a pro
ject because I enjoy the out
doors and all animals within.
In this project it teaches you
many different things about
wildlife such as: the Ten Com
mandments of Gun Safety,
how to keep records of birds,
casting tracks of different ani
mals. I have made some
tracks. When I go hunting I
look and see all the different
homes that the animals have.
I am taking a course on
taxidermy which is the art of
preserving animals, small and
large; also heads, novelties,
rugs and tanning hides.
During the past year I had
the pleasure of attending the
National Resources Confer
ence in Waynesviile, N. C.
For a week we studied about
the conservation of our na
tural resources, soils, forest,
minerals, water and wildlife.
