Aces Surprise Strong Gates County Team With 27-8 Win Friday
By FLYNN SIRRATT
The Gates County Red
Batons, defending AA Con
ference champions, were dealt
a stunning blow as the Eden
ton Aces rolled to a rousing
27-8 victory Friday night at
Hicks Field.
Although the Red Barons
received the opening kick
off, they suffered a serious
loss when Simon Copeland of
the Aces piltkcd up a fumble
on their 40 yard line, setting
up the forthcoming drive for
the first Edenton score. Full
back Ray Bateman made the
first carry of the series to set
up the touchdown followed by
Richard Moiling, who wound
up on the one yard line.
Junior halfback Arnold Broth
ers dove in for the touch
down and Ralph Garrett's
kick for the point after was
good to give the Aces an
early 7-0 lead.
Deep receiver Rocky Boone
bagged the kick-off only to
find himself in a horizontal
position on their 10 yard line
due to faulty footing. The
Red Barons were not to be
easily stymied. Their ground
attack gained them a first
down .and it appeared that
they may start a successful
drive. The Edenton defense
clamped down and threw
them for a series of losses
highlighted wh e n Percy
Twine rolled up their quarter
back, leaving them with a
painful punting situation.
Copeland received the punt
and after dodging attackers
for about 15 yards, he was
hit hard, causing him to
spout up the ball. The Aces
recovered the loose ball soon
to find themselves deep in
Gales territory on the 20 yard
line and facing an angry ene
my defense.
Garrett was sent in for a
field goal attempt, but it was
blocked and somewhere in the
ntclce a Red Baron linebacker
scooped it up. dashing for an
80 yard touchdown followed!

two point conversion to lead
the Aces 8-7.
During the first portion of
the second quarter the Red
Barons made slow progress,
but finally had to turn over
the ball. However, Edenton
slipped up and a fumble was
recovered by Gates County.
Gates made an attempt to go
to the air only to lose it once
again to Edenton.
In the following series
freshman quarterback Gerald
Hall fired a pass to Thomas
Slade who made a beautiful
cut and dashed into the end
zone before a wild crowd with
only a little more than two
minutes showing on the clock
in the first half. The snap to
holder Bill Chcsson was
dropped leaving the score at
the cpd of the first half 13-8.
Following half lime the
Aces proved that they had
not cooled off in the dressing
room by posting another score
and successful conversion
again by Garrett. A quick
pass from Chcsson to end
Chris Elliott set up the score
and almost resulted in a
touchdown. He was knocked
out of bounds on the Gates
15 yard line after a 35 yard
dash. Minutes later Chcsson

Brothers plunged onto pay
dirt followed by the extra
point. With plenty of time
still in the ball game, Eden
ton led 20-8.
The Red Barons, getting
the hint that the inside was
no man’s land, switched to
the outside only to be knock
ed for further losses. For
most of the third quarter
Edenton dominated with backs
Moiling and Brothers seeing
a lot of action. Deep in ene
my territory, Edenton fumbl

to the Red Barons, wh o
quickly went to work to
bridge the substantial gap.
The fourth quarter was the
setting for even greater ac
tion as the Edenton Aces
worked to maintain their lead
and Gales struggled to make
a comeback. Slade intercept

forced into a punting situa

and went to the air. nearly

There are a lot of things a
man can do for his country.
Including saying his piece,
pro or con.
And talk is an important part
of what makes a democracy like
ours work.
But in the final analysis, talk
is cheap. Personal involvement
accomplishes a lot more.
Putting part of your savings to
work for America is a step
in that dinectiop. To provide
some of the ecorfomic strength
it takes to make the whole
system run.
That’s one reason why Savings
Bonds mean a lot.
They help to pay part of the cost
of running a country where
you’re free to speak your mind.
And they help you at the same
time. With interest and security.
So next time you have some
thing to say about
America, let your m
Bond purchases do
part of the talking.
If they're lost, stolen, or
destroyed, we replace ’em. -**•
