By. MRS. NELLIE M. SANDERS Director Petti* row Reftocul Library Workshop in Roarokc Rapids last week, This was the lust of four such meetings across the state sponsored by the In- Service Training Committee of the Public Libraries Sec tion of the N. C. Library As sociation, of which I «m co chairman, Since this session was my particular responsi bility (the committee num bers shured the Job of acting os workshop moderator), I was especially gratified by the reaction to the program presented. Using as our theme u title shamelessly borrowed from :t Broadway play "Don’t Dothor Us—Wc Can't Cope," the pro gram was deliberately provo cative with several forms of presentation used skits, films, buzz groups, general discussion oil with the aim of improving the way li brarians deal with each other and with the public they serve. Our guest speaker was tho very dynamic assistant dean of the Library School at the University of Kentucky, Dr. Herman Totten—the first black man to earn a doctorate from a "white" library school. Dr. Totten inspired us all with his enthusiasm and his dedication to tho principle that public libraries must continue to improve and expand their usefulness in the community. The State Library in Ra leigh has been of immeasur able help to the public li braries in North Carolina and their cooperation in sponsor, ing these workshops was in dispensable. The hardest working member of our com mittee was Miss Nancy O'Neal, field librarian for the State Library, who acted as coordinator and general work horse for the four meetings. She and I were the only ones to earn four certificates stat ing that we had "successfully coped with the communica tions workshop conducted by the Public Libraries Section of the N. C. Library Associa tion" in Lumberton, Hender sonville, Asheboro and Roan oke Rapids. We had other participants from the State Library at the various locations: Miss Elaine von Oesen, assistant state li brarian; Miss Jane Wilson, children’s consultant; Miss Nancy Wallace, young adult consultant; Mrs. Marilyn Rose, audio-visual specialist, and Mrs. Virginia Gibson and Miss Sandy Harrison of the In-Wats Service. Our special guest in Roanoke Rapids was Mrs. Carolyn Neal Johnson, the new assistant state li brarian whose responsibilities include interlibrary coopera tion and the administration of federal aid. , SCREECHES Staff Members Short- Changed—ln lien of the usual staff meeting hitld at one of our libraries (for which we regularly close the libraries one day each -quarter) the majority of the staff trawled to Roanoke Rapids for the second day of the workshop there. Making th<» trip were the following library em ployees: Mrs. Joaitpc While THE CHOWAN HERALD End of Tooth Decay Is Predicted in Decade Within the next decade, tooth decay in the United States may be virtually elim inated, according to a spokes man for Canrad Precision Industries Inc., Newark, N. J. Working with the L. D. Caulk Company, Canrad* Hanovia has produced an ultra-violet light (known as the Dental Gun) which is used as an activator light in connection with a new tooth sealant. The teeth are first cleaned and conditioned by the dentist before placement of the seal ant material. After applica tion of a liquid plastic, the material is exposed to a harmless ultra-violet light which quickly hardens into a smooth plastic shield.
