Disabled Should
File For Benefits
If a person becomes unable
i to work because of a disabling
’ condition, it is important that
lie make application for social
security benefits as soon as
possible after disability starts.
It is not necessary to wait six
full months before contact is
made with the branch office.
By filing immediately, the
disabled person may receive
his benefit checks at an earl :
ier date. Delay in filing a
claim could cause the loss of
some benefits.
If someone is disabled and
can't work, he should get in
touen with the social security
office right away. A tele
phone call might save a
trip. Correct information can
be furnished by expert tech
nicians who are trained to as
sist the public in such mat
ters.
For more disability informa
tion, call 338-3931.

was especially gratified by
the reaction to the program

Using as our theme u title
shamelessly borrowed from :t

presentation used skits,
films, buzz groups, general

of improving the way li

and with the public they
serve. Our guest speaker was
tho very dynamic assistant
dean of the Library School at
the University of Kentucky,
Dr. Herman Totten—the first
black man to earn a doctorate
from a "white" library
school. Dr. Totten inspired
us all with his enthusiasm
and his dedication to tho
principle that public libraries
must continue to improve and
expand their usefulness in
the community.
The State Library in Ra

their cooperation in sponsor,

dispensable. The hardest
working member of our com

State Library, who acted as
coordinator and general work
horse for the four meetings.
She and I were the only ones
to earn four certificates stat
ing that we had "successfully
coped with the communica

the Public Libraries Section
of the N. C. Library Associa

We had other participants
from the State Library at the
various locations: Miss Elaine
von Oesen, assistant state li
brarian; Miss Jane Wilson,
children’s consultant; Miss
Nancy Wallace, young adult
consultant; Mrs. Marilyn
Rose, audio-visual specialist,
and Mrs. Virginia Gibson and
Miss Sandy Harrison of the
In-Wats Service. Our special
guest in Roanoke Rapids was
Mrs. Carolyn Neal Johnson,
the new assistant state li

include interlibrary coopera

federal aid. ,

Walks on Water
To Pass Course
Would you walk on water
in order to pass a course in
engineering graphics? Well,
Penn State freshmen were
given the assignment and suc
ceeded.
The shoe materials included
aluminum, Styrofoam, cork,
and plywood. Each pair of
shoes was equipped with sta
bilizing fins on the “soles.”
The pontoon-like shoes aver
aged approximately four feet
in length and were strong
enough to hold a student
weighing more than 150 lbs.
The final exam featured a
race among the representa
tives of the research teams.
The winner turned out to be
Thomas E. Morck, of Glen
Rock, N. J. A freshman engi
neering major, he walked
forty yards in th* Univer
sity’s pool in two-and-one
half minutes.
A thorough written report
and complete engineering
drawings of the shoes were
required. Prof. Hugh F.
Rogers said students found
that "engineering can be fun.”
