In a re cent statement the candidate called the insurance situation in this state “intolerable."’ Veterans’Week lleing Observed The nation and Edenton celebrated Veterans Day Monday (formerly Armistice Hay) and Gov. Bob Scott pro claimed this week, October 23-29, as Veterans' Week in North Carolina. Said the governor: "The American soldier is every man and woman who has worn the military uniform of the United States with honor and he needs no eulogy from Bny man, but it is most fitting that we pause in the national life he has helped make pos sible to say with gratitude, thank you for this precious gift of freedom." In Edenton, Bob Jenkins, manager of the Employment Security Commission office, reports the theme of this j year’s Veterans Week, observ ance is “Remembering POW , MIAs and Veterans.” The ' POW-MIAs are the prison ers of war and those missing in action in Southeast Asia. He said that more than 76,000 Vietnam veterans have returned to North Carolina, and that many state agencies are joining forces to help these returning men and wo men find civilian employ ment. “Employment of veterans is •ne of the three points stale iovcrnmefft°wisHes t 6 embha- T. - jl jn-'itfirih i sr size during veterans Week, said Jenkins. “Veterans un employment, particularly job lessness among Vietnam era veterans, has been abnormal ly high in recent years. Our primary interest during Vet erans Week is to emphasize the need veterans have for jobs, but we would also like the public to be aware of the sacrifices being made bv peo ple in the armed forces.” Unemployment among vet i erans has averaged between 3 and 9 per cent in recent years, according to the em ployment office manager, or nearly twice the national adult average. Although pre cise figures arc not available for North Carolina, veterans employment officials believe veterans’ unemployment hero is below the national over age. International Post Marsh Dr. John E.
