Page 2-A Superintendent Reports By Dr. Eddie West In a day and age in which literature, as well as, sociologists stress the im personal and apathetic nature of society in general the reverse is happening in our school system. Yes, personalism, empathy, as well as student responsibility, abound in the Edenton-Chowan Schools. An excellent example of the “caring” and “valuing” of the worth and dignity of each person are students project undertaken this year by the D. F. Walker Junior High School student council. Unique ven tures, they reflect a real desire on the part of the students to be responsible, to “practice” the golden rule, to develop peer relationships, and to promote an “espirit de corp” at their school. Simple in nature, but broad in scope some of their innovative undertakings are shown below. Each month, all seventh and eighth grade pupils and teachers at D. F. Walker who have a birthday during that month are honored by the student council. This takes place in the school cafeteria with the council treating each person to birthday cake and punch! Initial indications are that his program will reap great dividends in terms of developing positive student attitudes toward peers and school. Another undertaking by the student council is the planning of all assembly programs. Previously all assembly programs were planned by adults. The student council now initiates, plans, organizes, coordinates, implements and HERE DEC 6 ONE BUTTON COLOR TUHIMG Model WP4SOOJW, 16* picture (measured diagonally). The exciting thing to note is that they are utilizing student groups from Holmes and Chowan high schools to conduct some of their assembly programs. Through this ' ap proach student responsibility is being fostered. Still another unique endeavor taking place through student government initiative is a regular public affairs program produced by students for students and faculty. Broadcast over the school public address system in the mornings, this activity does much to enhance communication skills of students in addition to promotion of student self image and positive attitudes toward school. Also planned for this year by the student council is a film cultural enrichment program. On a periodic basis, during study hall, students will be provided the opportunity to view an educational film. This activity has great potential for developing aesthetic appreciations. The purpose of the above mentioned activities as well as others being implemented by the D. F. Walker Student Council is to build good human relationships and un derstanding between the students, ’faculty, aides, custodians, and lunchroom personnel that will create an atmosphere of belongingness and togetherness at waixer School. The student council advisors are Mrs. Sandra Askew and Charles Everett, Jr. Members of the Student Council who have initiated these activities are: Seventh Grade- Continued on Page 5 U. I.
