Page 4-B Consolidation Plan Aired Here By FLYNN SURRATT V A multi-million dollar school P consolidation plan was I presented January 4 to the i Chowan County Commissioners i by the Edenton-Chowan Board I of Education. Although an endorsement of the plan was sought, the commissioners ; suggested that the plan needs ; further review with a pencil and ! some paper before more action j is taken. The same held true for • a request for $331,000 to be used I for remedial maintenance in the 1 school system. “We want to provide the best possible education to our young people and the best possible curriculum”, stated Supt. Eddie West in presenting the consolidation plan to the commissioners. Beginning with approval of the plan by the commissioners, the strategy moves through a series of objectives leading to a one issue APPLY NOW We Train Men to Work As LIVESTOCK BUYERS If you have some livestock experience we will train you Ito buv cattle, sheep and - . nog'. Inter-related to the consolidation plan was their bid for revenue sharing money. The commissioners stated that at this time the regulations concerning the use of this money were not clear, so no commitment could be made. Financing of the project would be dependent on this money as well as tax money and state and federal assistance, it was stated. Commissioner N. J. George pointed out that financing this plan could mean a tax levy in the neighborhood of $1 and chairman C. A. Phillips added that this is a high figure ih terms of the valuation of the county. This statement was countered by school board Chairman Eugene Jordan who inserted that at the same time salaries in the county would be on the rise over the years. As the original intent of the meeting became less clear, it was Dr. J. H. Horton and Dr. Edward G. Bond who brought things back in line, stating that the objective of the conference was not a yes or no answer to consolidation but tentative approval of the means for arriving at a concrete plan. An evaluation of the currect conditions of the school system also prompted the board of education to request the possibility of $331,000 to be used to get the system “in a minimal state of repair." Emphasis was placed on the fact that not enough money has been appropriated in the past for maintenance and this sum would .be needed to catch up with repair needs. After a time of clearing up existing problems, Supt. West stated that maintenance money could then be used for preventive maintenance. The commissioners also remained non-committal on this request. However, the commissioners strongly hinted that a request for $29,800.36 for current operational obligations would not be unreasonable. The figure represents budget deficits not anticipated when the budget draft was completed. While 3,094 students were winning places on the Dean's List, only 313 were failing setting a ratio of almost 10 honor students for every suspension. The men and women on the Dean’s List come from 97 of North Carolina's 100 counties, 32 other states and 16 other nations. Women, married students and veterans of the Vietnam War, three of the growing segments in the NCSU enrollment, helped raise the Dean’s List to the record total.
