This is in addition to the $5,000 previously pledged by the local Belk-Tyler Store. President S. Bruce Petteway stated that the donation, made to the Building and Development Fund, would be used in Phase II of the college’s master plan for relocation on the new campus site. Phase I of the master plan, has been completed on the new site located adjacent to the Albemarle Hospital on US 17 North. This facility, the Technical Center, houses all of the occupational programs offered by the college. Phase II plans call for the construction of a complex that will contain a library, administration and faculty offices, liberal arts classrooms and laboratories, music and drama area, and a student center. Sunday provided four new Vestrymen for terms of three years including James M. Bond, Dr. Allen L. Hornthal, Charles H. Wood, and Joseph A. Wright, Jr. Thomas H. Shepard was re elected Junior Warden. Dr. Hornthal was elected secretary of the Vestry, Mrs. Mary Jackson (ex officio) was elected treasurer. Appointments as chairmen of committees made by the rector were Wright,' Christian Education; P. Byron Kehayes, Lay Ministry; Dr. David Wright, Youth; John Woolard, Stewardship; Bond, Ushering; Mrs. William B. Rosevear, Gifts and Memorials; William B. Delegates to the 90th Annual Convention of the Diocese of adminstration is located will be j designated The Belk | Administration Building. The estimated cost of | construction for Phase II is | $2,000,000. Os this amount, the [ college must raise at least j $500,000 from local sources. j Gifts and pledges to the building I and development fund are [ urgently needed to meet this j goal. Organizations, clubs, [ businesses and individulas are j requested to respond to this | opportunity to build a great j regional community college. [ Donations may be sent directly j to the college. A telephone I inquiry will bring additional [ details. I Dr. Petteway pointed out that j the N. C. State Board of j Education and the Federal I government finance about 90 [ per cent of the cost of operating [ the college, and Pasquotank ( County provides the remainder. [ In order to build a new campus [ to meet the growing educational t requirements of the Albemarle j area, however, COA must [ obtain local assistance to secure | the necessary federal and state ( support for construction, he [ noted. Since the College of The j Albemarle was chartered in j 1960 as the first college in North j Carolina to be founded under j the Community College Act of j 1957, COA has made rapid ( expansion. There were only 182 students at COA when the college first opened its doors in 1961. Today, however, there are nearly 900 full-time students, more than 200 students attending part-time and approximately 3,000 persons enrolled in various adult education courses in the seven county Albemarle area served by the school. COA offers college transfer courses, vocational programs and special interest courses that, together, provide a wide variety of educational services to the region. Recently re-accredited for the next decade by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, COA has served thousands of students since it began operation.
