Page 8-B HOOTS NEW LIBRARIAN -Mr. William Kimball Varin has been named to the position of Washington Oeunty Librarian in Plymouth and began his duties on January 15th. Kim comes to us from the University of Kentucy Library School in Lexington where he was a classmate of the Chowan County Librarian. Mrs. Louise Darby of Shepard-Pruden Memorial Library in Edenton. Like me, Kim has been somewhat of a rolling stone with homes in Virginia, North Carolina, Florida, New York and Alaska mentioned in our conversations. He is a camping enthusiast and has visited the Outer Banks in the past, so this area is not entirely new to him. Since he happened to be here when we held our last Staff Meeting. Kim has already met a number of Washington County residents and 1 know he is looking forward to getting better acquainted in the community. SCREECHES WRONG TOWN-One of the cardinal rules for publicity is “Always get the names right” and I have discovered that place names are almost as important as those of persons. Some time ago, we held a contest for children in the fourth through sixth grades with the cooperation of the teachers in Washington County Schools. The winning book reviews were broadcast over the radio and printed in the newspaper with the winners identified by name, grade and place of residence. Now I have been informed that Plymouth was credited with one winner too many w hile Creswell was shortchanged since Stephanie Norman lives in ' Creswell. not Plymouth. Acutally, Creswell produced five winners while Plymouth had six of the fifteen (Roper accounted for the other four). We are proud of all the boys (3) and girls < 12 > who wrote winning reviews as well as all the others who submitted entries. In the very real sense that reading is a rewarding activity, everyone was a winner. HOOTS OTHER THAN BOOKS-- Although books form the biggest part of the materials circulated through the libraries in the Pettigrew Region, there is a trend toward increased use Statement of Condition Edenton Savings & Loan Association Os Edenton, N. SANDERS Director Pcttitmr Regional Library of non-book Films have become a most popular item at the Shepard-Pruden Memorial Library since the rules have been changed to allow their use in school classrooms. They set some kind of a record in the month of December by furnishing 71 films wich were shown to a total audience of 5,438. Throughout the Region, a total of 278 films have been borrowed from the North Carolina State Library Film Service during the past six months - almost twice as many as during the same period last year. Another popular non-book material has been records - we circulated 1,379 in the Pettigrew Region during July through December 1972. Magazines have also been much in demand and we are gradually building the use of our collections of sewing patterns. New Books At Local Library New Books received at Shepard-Pruden Memorial Library.
