EARNHARDT TEXT. “This is my command that you ran love one another." Phil. 2:2 One day. on Bible class, Professor Creel woke up and shot a quick question, "Mr. Vereen, does God love the devil?" Vereen responded quickly. "I don't know about God but some of His followers seem to be crazy about him.” A man at the mourners bench was asked by the pastor if he was ready to renounce the devil and all his works. The mourner replied, “Pastor. I am an old man and I do not expect to live much longer. Don't you think it would be unwise for me to make a new enemy?” The pastor teaching a membership class asked if they loved everybody. Old man Bull Simpkins said, "Yes sir. some more than others.” Some of my saints got into a fight and there was one man that hesitated to promise me not to renew it. Finally he promised to pray for his enemy and accommodate him whenever he could, but there must be one understanding, “He must never cross my path again.” The Scripture says. “Greet one another with a holy kiss.” It also says, “As far as lieth in you live peaceably with all men.” FOR SOIL SAMPLES and BULK SPREADER SERVICE Lime - Lime and Potash Mixed - Fertilizer We Con Supply You With Your TOBACCO BED NEEDS SEE OR CALL Home Feed & Fertilizer Co. Letter To The Editor Dear Sir: Now that the year of 1972 has come to a close and I have had time to review the accomplishments of our office, I realize that these accomplishments could not have been made without the assistance of many people. The Chowan Herald has helped make it possible for us to inform people of their rights and responsibilities under Social Security. I especially want to express to you my appreciation for the fine service I have received in the past regarding announcements, and news items that I felt were of special importance to the readers of your area. Please accept my thanks for helping us to assist the people of Chowan County. Sincerely, Robert W. Butts on Sunday will deliver the third in a series of six sermons with the topic being “The Miracle of Healing the Noblemen’s Son.” Church school begins at 9:30 A.M., and the vesper hour is 6 P.M., with a sermon by the pastor. MAKE CHURCH - GOING ... A HABIT NO ALIBIS WITH GOI> International Sunday School Lesson for January 28. 1973. LESSON TEXT: Ezekiel 18. There are many in the world today who-in discussing the Bible-point to the fact (sometimes quite aggressively) that there is great contradiction therein...that the Old Testament teaches that God is a jealous God; that transgressions will be avenged with dire and dreadful consequences, even unto the children, whereas the New Testament reveals God as a loving, understanding and forgiving Diety. “Progressive revelation” might be applied in linking the two apparently dissimilar parts of the Bible together. For times, mores, people all change and (hopefully) progress in knowledge! There were many misconceptions about the moon until the advent of the current Space Age disproved them! So, as modern man’s knowledge grows and expands, old, pre-conceived ideas are discarded for more progressive, scientific facts. It therefore follows that Christianity has gone through its’ “growing pains" and become adult. In the light of this Christian maturity, we are naturally faced with the fact of man’s own personal responsibility before God. Certain it is that we must respond to His great love with righteous living. Not “holier-than-thou” living...but with a loving heart, a generous spirit, and a deep and abiding concern and respect for our fellow men! In short, conduct acceptable to God. When we fall short in what is required of us, it is, of necessity, because of personal flaws in our own character. We cannot-as the people of Judah attempted to do--blame others for our shortcomings. We can try~ but we will not deceive God, ’who sees into the Heart? oT every man, and judges accordingly. The irrefutable truth is that we all belong to God-in the beginning and in the end. And what we do with ourselves and with our lives between birth and death is our responsibility...and ours alone! We can earnestly practice the Christian life and become acceptable in God’s eyes, or we can dissipate ourselves and our God-given gifts in a life of wasteful, self centered futility. The choice is ours! The idea of transmitted guilt (the sins of the father being visited upon the son) was a popular belief in Biblical times. To dispel this idea Ezekiel drew three graphic illustrations, using first, second and third generations in his account. (Ezekiel 18: 5-9, 10-13, 14-18). Thus stress was put on the individual accountability, alone. God never condemns one man for the sin of another; He does, however, hold both men accountable for their own actions, their own errors, their own thoughts. He may weigh the actions of an erstwhile sinner who has repented, and judge him entirely on the worthiness of his repentance, forgetting his former guilt. But the man who has hitherto walked in righteousness and then turned to sin...this is the man | who will find himself judged 1 on the basis on his sin! I Often, as we go through | life, we commit an act of 1 opportunity. That act may be i wrong, and cause us to suffer [ from a sense of guilt. We can i justify our actions to I ourselves, in a futile attempt |to ease our sense of i unworthiness. We can even justify ourselves in the sight of our neighbors, turning to them our “public” face. But we can NEVER hoodwink God! For He sees what is truly in our hearts, what self aggrandisement prompted us to take action in the first place, and,our feeble arguments, while they appease ourselves, do | not appease God! We should, therefore, take i the teachings of Ezekiel to heart-for there is wisdom in his words, and a path clearly marked...straight to the throne of the Lord.
