Gretchen Holzhauer. has begun work in a new position in New Jersey. She is the Children’s Librarian now in three libraries near the New York-New Jersey line: Upper Saddle River. Franklin Lakes and Allendale Public Libraries. Since Gretchen especially enjoyed working with young library users, this sould be an interesting assignment for her and a rewarding choice for those three libraries. SCREECHES LIBRARIES AND LAWS— During the past week, the State Library has issued two News Flashes (from the Public Library Development Division under Assistant State Librarian Elaine von Oesen) concerning pending legislation. The first one had to do with a bill to "Consolidate. Revise and Amend the General Statutes Relating to Counties". This includes the State Law governing public libraries and the most significant charge recommended is in relation to the appointment of library boards. The present law makes it mandatory that a board be appointed: the new law would make it optional. Members of the Senate Committee on Local Government and Regional Affairs are now studying this bill and an identical House Bill is being considered No. 2 on Local Committee No 2 on Local Government. The other item of pending legislation called to our attention by the State Library was the long-awaited enabling bill including libraries in tax New Books At Local Library New books received at Shepard-Pruden Memorial Library include the following: ADI’LT-Fiction ..Time to go Back by Mabel Esther Allan. SANDERS Director Prttii row Rational Ukwy levies. The State Constitution has been changed, effective July 1. 1973. but implementing -legislation needs to be enacted to carry out the intent of the constitutional amendment. Heretofore, taxes could be levied without a vote by the people only for “necessary expenses" and libraries were not considered a necessary expense - neither were airports or hospitals. The bill now under consideration would eliminate the present restriction that library funds be drawn from non-tax sources except by special vote. This is a step in the right direction and one that library trustees and librarians have long sought. The Shepard-Pruden Library will be closed on Wednesday March 14th. The Pettigrew Regional Staff Meeting is to be held on that date. Regular hours will be resumed on Thursday, March 15th. 'Sleuth' Plans Run In Norfolk Games are the subject of "Sleuth" the New York and London thriller-hit that is coming to the stage of the Chrysler Theater for three performances Friday and Saturday. The games-players in them, however, are not contending for the usual trophies, but for greater stakes - the salvaging of damaged self-respect, revenge and even life; which is why "Sleuth" has been widely praised in London, New York and other cities as one of the most spine-tingling exercises in bafflement, trickery and suspense in stage history. “Quite the best play of its kind I have ever seen,” is the comment passed on "Sleuth” by Clive Barnes, critic of the New York Times, and John Chapman in the New York Daily News was only a little less superlative in his comment that “this is one of the best melodramas I have ever seen -- maybe it is the best.” Other metropolitan critics have echoed these unstinted praises. George Rose and David Haviland are starred in this play that opened on Broadway in November, 1970, and is still drawing capacity audiences-. NEW FABRIC Although not or. the market yet, there is a fabric that responds to temperature changes. As the temperature rises, the fabric becomes thin ner and cooler. As the temperature falls, the fabric increases in thick ness and warmth reten tion. So before long, a single garment may play year-round duty, notes Harriet Tutterow, exten sion clothing specialist.
