The bride is the daughter of

The bridegroom is the son of
Mrs. Esther Duke and the late
Jim Lacy Duke, Sr., and the
grandson of Mrs. Sallie Sawyer,
all of Portsmouth.
The maid of honor was Shari
Price of Brandon, Fla.
Bridesmaids were Beth Ward of

Awards Grants
Career Advancement
Scholarships —for mature,
working women who desire
_ further education or training
’ were awarded to 71 women in 23
. states, the District of Columbia
and Puerto Rico in March by
the Business and Professional j
Women’s Foundation.
This unique scholarship j
program is designed for women
who must have additional
training to obtain a promotion,
change career fields, or re
enter the job market. The latest
awards bring the total number of
scholarships in the past three
years to 467 in 49 states, with a
value of $114,806.
Scholarships are funded by
BPW contributions and grants
from PPG Industries
Foundation, IBM, the Lilly]
Endowment, the Mary
Reynolds Babcock
Foundations, the Esso
Educational Foundation, Avon
Products Foundations, and the
Mobil Foundation.
The scholarship fund was
established by BPW in 1970
because of great difficulty ex
perienced by working women in
finding educational assistance.
The awards may be used for
training in any career field for
which the applicant is qualified,
academic or vocational. Study
f may be full-time or part-time.
Courses of study now include
medicine, law, special
education, scientific research,
business administration and
secretarial science, medical
records administration, life
insurance and real estate sales,
dental hygiene, public
administration, and many other
fields.

MARRIED—Mr. and Mrs. James Joseph Weaver of
Ocala, Fla., announce the marriage of their daughter,
Mary Beth, to Stephen Whitman Baxley, son of Mr. and
Mrs. James Russell Baxley, Sr., of Edenton. The wed
ding took place on April 7 in Danforth Chapel on the
campus of N. C. State University. The couple will
make their home in Raleigh, where Mr. Baxley is a
senior at N. C. State. Mrs. Baxley was graduated with
high honors in May.
