Page 2-A DTti - LEARNING CAN BE FUN - “A very successful work session” was the verdict of the librarians of the Pettigrew Regional Li bran/ who met for their quarterly S taff Meeting at the Washington County Library last week. For a change, we did not have any g;uests this time but made use of our own resources to expand our capabilities foir service to the public. Following the regular' reports of the three county' librarians (Mrs. Esther Davenport of Tyrrell Count)' Public Library in Columbia, Mrs. Louise Darby of Shepard - Pruden Memorial Library im Edenton, and Kim Varin of Washington County Library in Plymouth) there was general discussion of plans for special summer programs. The morning work session was devoted to an intensive drill on the use of one of our latest reference tools —a new edition of a dictionary. It happens to be a pet of mine since I readily admit that I am a nut about words Crossword puzzles, Scrabble and other word games fascinate me. There have been several new dictionaries published in the last ten years, most of them large, WEIGH LESS OR PAY NOTHINGi Slarl losing weight today OtR MONEY BACK. Besides the meanings for words, including such new ones as machismo, waterbed, strung-out and uptight, this i dictionary can be used for mdny other kinds of information. Some of the "extras” we ] explored were: Division of words into syllables for printing and pronunciation (not necessarily always the same!) understanding abbreviations, meaning of foreign phrases and of symbols, information about colleges and universities, short biographies of notable people and a pronouncing gazeteer which includes data on rivers, lakes and mountains as well as cities and nations. If you have never spent any time exploring a dictionary, I heartily recommend that you try it the staff did and they enjoyed it immensely. After the buffet lunch provided by the Washington County librarians, the staff con vened in the auditorium where the subject was audio- 1 visual materials. Mrs. Louise I Darby shared with us some of the highlights of the conference on popular music which she attended in Smithfield recently. She u rged that a larger share of our materials budget be devoted to recordings since they are proving increasingly popular in the Pettigrew Region. At the request of Mrs. Marilyn Rose, the Audio-Visual Consultant, for the State Library, I enlisted the aid of the staff members in previewing a film that has recently been added to the collection. The title was simply “Tumbleweed, A Saga” and if you ask the members of the staff what it was about, you will get iriany different answers since it seemed to mean something different to each of us, though almost everyone enjoyed it. SCREECHES A HORRIBLE EXAMPLE Librarians, like preacher’s kids, are locked into an unpleasant stereotype which is used much too often by writers of fiction. Whenever I stumble across a new description of an unpleasant librarian, I cringe anew and vow that nobody on my staff will behave that way. A case in point was the sequence in a new book (which I enojyed otherwise) by Fred Chappell called “The Gaudy Place”. Just to make sure nobody missed it, I had Kim Varin read it to the staff. But then, to counteract the effect, I had found some complimentary words on librarians in another new book which I also shared with the staff.
