'•The 1973 General Assembly has , amended the State Immunization granting the State Board of Health authority to decide whether routine smallpox vaccination of children is in the best interest of public health. The N. C. State Board of Health, at its regular quarterly meeting in. Pinehurst, has followed through by adopting regulations omitting smallpox vaccination from the list of required immunizations for children. This ' action follows recommendation by the U. S. Mac Cormack, chief of the Communicable Disease Control Section of the State Board of Health, the move was based on statistics which show a rapid decline on the world-wide incidence of smallpox. There has not been a case of smallpox reported in North Carolina since 1948. The public health official pointed out that the risk of dying from smallpox in this country is far less than that of dying from vaccine complications. Dr. Mac Cormack cautioned, however, that persons traveling to countries where smallpox still exists will be required to take a smallpox vaccination. Throughout the two-day event it seemed that visitors to the area out numbered area residents. Many took advantage of the opportunity to view the historic sites as well, despite the rather cloudy skies and general gloom. Most people want both parts of Medicare. No part of the card should be returned to social security unless a person does not want the medical-insurance. Starting July 1, 1973, the premium for medical insurance will be $6.30 a month. Any person receiving a card should call the social security office if they have any questions.
