Page 6-A Recreation Scoreboard MIDGET LEAGUE Cubs 6-0 Cardinals 1-3 Tigers 0-4 The Cubs beat the winless Tigers 39-15 in the only game played in this league last week. The Cubs scored eight runs in the first frame, 17 inthesecond and 14 in the third to win behind 33 hits. A. Bunch and nine hits and B. Whichard had seven for the Cubs while G. White, R. Ward and B. Baker each had two for the Tigers. LITTLE LEAGUE Orioles 2-1 Yankees 2-1 A’s 1-2 Reds 1-2 The Yankees scored in the bottom of the seventh to defeat the A’s, 13-12 with each team being limited to two hits. Getting the Yanks’ hits were Wills and Overton while E. Small and W. White hit safely for the A’s. The Orioles defeated the Reds, 13-5, while the losers were held to a single by J. Chesson. B. Ashley, K. Slade and B. Powell each had two hits for the winners. The A’s pushed across 18 runs on 12 hits to defeat the Reds who could get but eight hits and as many runs. D . Jordan led the A’s hitting with three while A. Sawyer, W. White and A. Brothers each got two for the A’s. B. Hutchison and T. Bass had two hits each for the losers. The Orioles and the Yankees played a tight game with the Orioles winning, 14-11, while limiting the Yanks to but three hits. Two of them were gathered by Overton. J. Lavoie and Armstrong each had two hits for the Orioles. TEENER LEAGUE City 4-1 County 1-4 The City team, while limited to two hits by R. Leary and G. Harrell, managed to get seven runs and defeat the County team, 7-6. G. Hall was on the mound for the winners and had a homer. T. Leary got the other hit for the winners while R. Leary and E.. L. Leary, J. Castelloe, R. Hollowed and R. Potts each had three hits for the Guard while M. Deßlois and W. Perry had a like number for the Towners. Jaycees scored four runs in the first and third innings and went on to defeat Carter’s, 11-7, although out-hit 19-14. C. Forehand lead the Jaycees with three hits and H. Spruill, L. Jordan and J. Severson got two each. H. Collins, R. Hughes and A. Dail each had three hits for Carter’s. Chowan Hospital defeated the Towners, 11-7, behind the hitting of H. Land, M. Barham and B. Ashley, each getting three hits. M. Deßlois, P. Dail and D. Ambrose each had three for the Towners. The Jaycees collected 25 hits, four each from J. Barrow, C. Forehand and J. Hollowell, in defeating UPS, 24-5. T. Nixon and E. Tynch each had three hits for UPS. The Hosptial won the second game of the week, defeating UPS 32-14 behind the hitting of B. Dail. R. Harrell, H. Whiteman Dies In Wilson Thomas LaFayette Whiteman, Route 1, Tyner, died Monday in Eastern North Carolina Sanitarium in Wilson after an illness of three weeks. He was 65. Fate Whiteman was a native of Chowan County, born September 21, 1997, son of the late Edward and Ellen Harrell Whiteman. He was married to the former Josie Jordan, who survives. Also surviving is a son W. E. Whiteman of Plymouth; a daughter, Mrs. James D. Bray of Virginia Beach, Va.; a brother, Alma T. Whiteman of Edenton; two sisters: Miss Zone Whiteman and Mrs. Mattie Perry, both of Edenton; and six grandchildren. Mr. Whiteman was a retired truck driver for Estes Motor Lines. He was a member of Rocky Hock Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held at 2 P.M. today (Thursday) in Colonial Funeral Chapel with Rev. George Broome officiating. Society News Mr. and Mrs. Willie M. Proctor, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas A. Proctor and Mr. and Mrs. Lorch W. Stallings returned Sunday night after spending a long weekend with Stallings son Eddie and family. Then early Saturday morning the men went down to Chesapeake Bay off the Maryland coast and spent four | hours fishing for the big Blues. They came in with 87 of them. Mr. and Mrs. Handy West and children visited relatives in Dunn last week. Mrs. Johnetta White has returned home after undergoing surgery in Norfolk General Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Tom Palmer have returned to their home in Asheville after visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. N. J. George for several days. Miss Linda Harrell spent a few days with her parents Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Harrell. Dr. and Mrs. David Wright and children have left for a month’s stay in England. Richard Hardin has returned to Duke University after spending his vacation with his parents, Dr. and Mrs. Richard Hardin. Mr. and Mrs. Leo Katkaveck and son Steve have returned home from Nags Head after spending a week. 0 Miss Beth Katkaveck who is spending the summer at Mytle Beach, spent the week with her family at Nags Head last week. Miss Aurelia Layden has returned home after an extended trip to Charleston, S. C. where she visited her niece and family, Mrs. Julia Burton Taylor. She left Charleston for Houston, Texas where she joined the Lloyd Burton family for a three week trip to Colorado. She was accompanied home by her niece Mrs. Julia Burton Taylor and daughter Nancy who will spend a few days before returning home to Charleston, S. C. Miss Bonnie Conger has returned to Charlotte after visiting relatives for several days. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Casciano and children, Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Poole, Mary and John of Hampton, Va. spent Sunday with Mrs. John M. Bond. Mr. and Mrs. Don Haithcock and children returned to their home in Durham after visiting Mrs. Haithcock’s family Mr. and Mrs. Richard Hollowell, Sr. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Ross of Raleigh spent last weekend with his mother Mrs. J. J. Ross. Mr. and Mrs. Dwight Flanagan have returned to Wilmington after spending a few days visiting Mr. and Mrs. Pat Flanagan on Country Club Drive. Ist. Lt. Rebecca Ellis of Hawaii and Mrs. Ted Will of Corvallis, Oregon visited with Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Morris and relatives on Sunday. Mildren Smith has returned to Panama City, Fla. after visiting with relatives a few weeks. Martin Parker has returned home after touring for the Army Third Infantry Division in Germany and London, Englant during the month of June witt the Howard Hanger Trio. The answer to this is, “Yes, you should.” Furidan put out at planting time will not control Southern Com Root Worm that attacks peanuts in August. Our recommendation on Diazone is the same it has been in the past - 14 lbs. of 14G put out in July in a 15 inch ban or eight lbs. the first week of August put out in a 15 inch band. If Diazone is broadcast the first week in August, our recommendation is 18 to 20 lbs. There are also questions on the use of Terraclor for Tired of the humdrum? The session vyill begin instruction Monday July 23 at 8:30 A.M. on the tennis courts. All interested persons come by the municipal building and fill out a participation form for tennis or be at the tennis courts July 23 at 8:30 A.M. to register. There will be three times offered, 8:30 A M., 9:45 A.M. and 11:00 A.M. Horse Shoes The Recreation Department is sponsoring a Horse Shoe Tournament for interested persons in Chowan County on Saturday and Sunday afternoons July 28 and 29 behind the National Guard Armory. This will be a double elimination tournament divided into three classes: boys under 16, men 16 and over, and a women’s class. In each class there will be singles and doubles competition. There will be a $1 entry fee for all entries. No class will be held if less than four entries are received for the particular division. Entry deadline will be Wednesday July 25 at 5 P.M. Interested persons may register at the municipal building or directly with me. Trophies will be given to the winners of singles and doubles in each class. Red Spider has been found in some of the peanut patches and this is a hard insect to control. Azadrin has been cleared for red spider will cause a whitening of the leaf.
