T hurß< toy, July 12. 1973 Men Involved In Airport Inventory RALEIGH Bob Walden and John Brantley are taking inventory. So far they haven’t counted anything in a stock room, but they have run into people who want to know what they’re doing. Walden and Brantley are taking an inventory of North Carolina airports. That sounds easy. You'd think you could count Douglas in Charlotte, Raleigh-Durham, Asheville- Hendersonville and so on. Those are. just the easy ones. The" inventory wants those, but it is also necessary to find out if there’s an air strip in Eden, or Concord, or Norlina. If so, what’s it like: Lighted: Paved? Walden and Brantley are part of the team involved in the preparation of a State Airport System Plan. The inventory they’re doing is more than just counting and measuring airports across the State. “They’ll be counting' and measuring sure,” said John Cameron, Transportation Department assistant secretary for planning, "but in addition, they'll be looking at airports in terms of land use and possible expansion. The State hasn’t been in the airport business in any big way up until now. This plan is to give us some direction.” The idea for the two-year plan which will use the inventory, is to learn the means for developing a balanced system of airports and the role of each of these airports to meet the needs of all civil aviation segments in North Carolina. There were 17-million domestic passengers on scheduled' airlines in 1950. By 1971, there was 156-million. General aviation accounted for 13-million hours in 1960. That had grown to 26-million hours in 1971. The technical work of the plan is being done by the Department of Transportation with Research Triangle Institute and Aviation Systems. The plan is part of the implementation of the federal Airport and Airway Development Act of 1970. Fish Fry Money Raised The Edenton-Chowan Rescue Squads and the Edenton National Guard sponsored a benefit fish fry on June 23 for the Howard Hughes family. The benefit raised $2,667.29 for the family. The sponsors greatly appreciate all efforts of those involved, as well as the patience shown on the part of many who had to stand in line for quite a while. Sunday Sermon Topics Chosen SERMON TOPIC "Jesus Wept!” is the topic chosen by Rev. E. L. Earnhardt for his sermon Sunday morning at Edenton United Methodist Church. His text is John 11:32- 35.
