Thursday, August 2. 1973 , Coast Guard Marks Birthday The U. S. Coast Guard—the ' service that belies its name— celebrates its 183rd bithday Saturday. The Coast Guard does guard the nation’s coasts as the chief maritime law enforcement agency of the United States. But it also operates in almost every state and around the globe. Most dramatic, and perhaps best known, of the small service’s missions is search and rescue. Last year the Coast Guard saved more than 2,500 lives. It also saved approximately $1.7-billion in cargo and vessels, more than ■twice the Coast Guard’s annual budget. After having protected man from his environment for more than a century and a half, the Coast Guard is now faced with attempting to help save the environment from man. It does . this through a concentrated effort in prevention and clean * up of spills of oil and other hazardous materials in our nation's waters. With nearly 300 ships, 160 aircraft and 650 shore units, the Coast Guard’s 36,000 officers and men make up the world’s laiigest maritime rescue force. Yet the Coast Guard is small by comparison to its sister armed services, of which it is a full partner by law and tradition since its inception in 1790. Coast Guard cutters and men have fought with distinction in every one of our country’s wars. The Fifth Coast Guard District, with offices in Portsmouth, Va., covers the District of Columbia, Maryland, North Carolina and Virginia. There are 27 cutters of various sizes and many smaller boats and more than 40 shore units within the district Last year (1972) units of the Fifth District responded to 5,609 distress calls and investigated several hundred oil pollution cases. Other functions of Coast * Guard units in the district include: Boating Safety Conducting an extensive boating safety program, stressing education as well as enforcement. The District’s six boating safety detachments (BOSDETS) boarded 4,111 boats and issued 1,699 violations. Aids to Navigation The district’s fleet of buoy tenders and shore based personnel maintained a network of 5,300 aids to navigation, ranging from buoys to offshore light structures. Marine Safety Ensuring merchant marine ships and their crews conform to safety regulations and investigating marine casualties. Carrying out a port safety program to protect harbors and shipping. Aircraft from the Coast Guard’s largest air station at 4 Elizabeth City again carried out r the service’s responsibilities on the International Ice Patrol, besides the station’s busy search and rescue workload. The Coast Guard’s motto is Semper Paratus Always Ready. Since founded by Alexander Hamilton in 1790, the Coast Guard and its forerunners, the Revenue Marine, Lighthouse Service and Lifesaving Service, have strived to live up to that ideal. Study may provide you with intelligence, but it takes thinking to develop wisdom. Taylor Theatre Edenton, N. C. Thurtdsy, FrlcUy, S«tvnUy, AuftMt 7.
