yhursdav, August 9. 1973 V Around lltowan Farms ■ By: R. M. THOMPSON, BB County Extension Chairman ■ With all the interest in food ■hat has been aroused by the ■xiblicity, we are suggesting ■hat you might attempt a fall ■garden. There is always a need ■for fresh vegetables and even food is a bargain in the ■pocery store, a well planned ■garden can be both economical Hind relaxing along with being ■useful. ■ Select a site close to the house ■hat is in full sun and can be ■irrigated if needed. Have your ■garden site sampled if possible ■and buy your seed by variety ■lames from a reputable firm. ■Many times old seed will not ■germinate. When you plant the ■seed, do not plant too deep. A ■good rule to follow is to plant at ■a depth three to four times the ■diameter of the seed. Firm the ■seed bed and irrigate if ■possible. ■ Most soil for a garden should a pH of about 6.0 and I ■wapld broadcast the fertilizer in ■the garden mixed with organic ■matter such as compost or ■rotted sawdust and fertilize ■with 8-8-8 or 10-10-10 at the rate ■of about 20 to 30 pounds per 1000 ■square feet. I Vegetables that you can plant ■now are beets, broccoli, brussel ■sprouts, cabbage, carrots, ■collards, kale, mustard and ■ some people plant fall irish ■ potatoes. It is also possible with ■ proper care to have tomatoes in ■ the fall. ■ If you are interested in a fall ■ garden, we have at the County ■ Extension office an Extension ■ booklet No. 122 that is entitled ■ “Garden Manual” that is ■ available on request. You might ■ would like to start planning ■ your garden and if you have ■ questions on varieties, this ■ information is also available in ■ this booklet. Any questions you l hav| concerning gardening, \le4se call us at 482-8431. r PEANUTS-We would like to I encourage you to continue your leaf spot control on peanuts. We have noticed that leaf spot has continued to be a problem this year, more so than in 1972. The chemicals we have to control leaf spot are excellent if you apply and use it according to the label. It is also probable that an insecticide should be applied with *his, therefore, be sure and follow the label for both of these chemicals.
