Blowing Rock Postmaster
Carl Sims said that the modern
“Postal Piper, The Traveling
Post Office” will be at Tweetsie
Railroad’s special celebration
honoring the “Old Timers” of
the East Tennessee and
Western North
Carolina Railroad.
Paul Harvey, nationally
known radio and television
news commentator, will be
featured at the event, along
with the Governors of North
Carolina and Tennessee, plus a
host of local and national
entertainers focusing on former
old-time Railroad employees.
Sims said that Harry C.
Robbins, president of Tweetsie,
one of North Carolina’s most
popular nostalgic tourist
attractions, had conceived the
idea of trying to bring together
former employees of ET&WNC,
some of which will be nearly 90
years old.
More that 50 of these former
employees and hundreds of
railroad “buffs” will bring
nostalgic memorabilia, not the
least of which will be related to
the Postal Service.
Sims said that prior to the
advent of building the railroad
from Johnson City to Boone in
the late 1800’s, mail was
delivered into the remote
mountain area by wagons and
horseback riders.
Sims said that when
“Tweetsie” came about, a
railroad mail car was used
