State approval and subsequent approval by our local board creates an agreement between the two parties that the school administrative unit will carry out the plan as approved and may' do so without any further State approval,” says Dr. West. “Before submitting our proposal, we made a careful assessment of our instructional needs and planned activities designed to meet those needs. We included a variety of on-the job training activities and continuing education programs to assist teachers and other school personnel in securing necessary skills,” says West. “Our plan also includes provisions for college credit work as a means of earning renewal credit and upgrading certificates and degrees," he added. “We are delighted at the approval of our Plan II proposal.” says Dr. West. “It will mean a greater variety of staff development activities more closely related to the day to-day needs of our teachers in the classroom.” - Wouldn’t it be fun, if a husband could do all the things his wife suspects he does? -News, McAlester, Okla. THE CHOWAN HERALD Pesticide Storage Care Is Urged By C. W. Overman j j Most vegetable garden, i flower garden, shrub and tree pesticides are poisonous or I toxic. They have to be to control i the bugs, worms and scales that ' attack our plants. < Periodic applications of pesticides are necessary to control pests that attack our plants if they are to grow, be pretty and be edible as the case may be. Home gardeners will necessarily have a quantity of pesticides to keep over for future applications. Storage area for this purpose is necessary. Such storage must be safe from children. Just using a shelf that children can get to is dangerous. The storage place should be cool and dry. By all means keep it locked. Rate of application is very important. So many people often tend to follow the practice, “If an ounce is good two ounces is better”. There are some instances when a slight increase in application may be needed, but, first try it on a few plants, if no damage occurs and it does a better job you will know. Read the label carefully before applying each time. Follow the instructions. If the label does not indicate for use on the plants you desire it for, don’t use it or only try it cautiously. There are different plants the pesticide manufacturer can’t list them Letter To The Editor Dear Mayor Byrum: I am attaching my check and enclosing the bill stub, in payment of electric and water charges based on a meter reading of July 5, 1973. I want you to know that I am paying these charges under protest, because the charges for electricity are unreasonable and the basis of the computation of these charges discriminate against residential customers. Upon visiting the billing office in the Municipal Building and inquiring about the charges, I was handed a printed statement addressed “To our Residential Customers”, not dated, and presumably prepared by James D. Martin, Supt., Electric & Water Department. Along with the statement, I was also handed a sheet entitled “TOWN OF EDENTON, NEW ELECTRIC RATES JUNE, “"MMT Traditionally, electric rates are arranged in brackets of usage so that each higher bracket of usage is at a lower rate per KWH. In the new electric rates this is true for the winter (Nov. - June) rate schedule for residential and for both the winter and summer (July - Oct.) rate schedule applying to small commercial. The rate schedule for large commercial is the same for winter and summer. However, the rate schedule for summer residential shows an increase and each KWH over 600 KWH usage compared to the immediately preceding bracket. This letter is the point of discrimination. Mr. Martin makes two points of interest. First, the Town of Edenton adopted the rates charged VEPCO retail customers. I submit that just because VEPCO reportedly discriminates against its residential customers that does not constitute a valid reason for the Town of Edenton to do likewise. Second, Mr. Martin states that the cost of power varies seasonally. I submit that a KWH of power purchased on a wholesale basis can in no way know whether it will be delivered to a residence, a small business concern, or a large business establishment. Your reconsideration of this matter of rates will be greatly appreciated, and I respectfully request that I be informed of the results. Yours truly, William N. At least a simple, inexpensive hand duster is worth having. Clean it after each application and it will last a long time. For spraying, perhaps the simplest unit is that which operates on a water hose with the water pressure. If instructions are followed it will do a good job. The most inefficient and may be the most damaging application is sprinkling and shaking through a cloth. Remember, pesticides are necessary, they are safe when used properly, and they are safe when stored properly. It is better to be safe then sorry. WhMis Nosed la Horseshoes Smith and Lowe won the double elimination horseshoe tournament held July 28-29 with Forehand and Hollowell being the elimination winner. There were five men’s doubles teams in the tourney and the winners received trophies. Nine entered the men’s singles double elimination event during the same time with C. Forehand taking the title over J. Hollowell. Roy Winslow, recreation director, said another tournament is planned for this fall.
