LABOR-MANAGEMENT PEACE PROPOSED
I-abor leaders are being urged by a top management
spokesman to support specific issues on which business
tnd labor have a common interest.
E. D. Kenna, president of the National Association
»f Manufacturers says, that business and labor have a
nutual interest “in our government’s urging the tearing
town of tariffs, quotas, rigged specifications and all other
tindrances to American businesses in foreign markets.’’
dr. Kenna also pointed out to labor that:
“We have an equal stake in bringing economic reality
o bear on environmentalist proposals on a case-by-case
tasis.
“We share an interest in raising the standards of work
ng conditions throughout the world and raising labor
iroductivity at home.
“We have an equal stake in training and retraining our
teople throughout their working lives so that they remain
iseful members of society, with the self-respect and self
eliance that such usefulness brings.
“And, we should share an interest in government eco
nomic policies that permit the earning of the necessary
to make possible plant expansion and moderniza
ion and provide the additional jobs necessary to produce
he goods and services that are the keys to prosperity.’’
Labor and management should cooperate for the good
f the entire nation and join in a united front to make
.merican industry more productive and competitive.

Ingenuity Helps
To Solve Wheat
Transportation
Improvisation becomes es
sential when the right kind
of railroad rolling stock is
not available to do the job.
This happened when United
States wheat went interna
tional and the bulk of the
Russian grain movement to
shipping ports had to be han
dled aldng with the regular
domestic harvest.
Highly sophisticated com
puter systems were utilized
by some individual railroads.
An unprecedented conversion
of coal open hopper cars,
cleaned and outfitted with
covers to haul grain was ini
tiated.
The Illinois Central Gulf
Railroad experimented with
a removable fiberglass top to
convert open hopper cars into
covered cars for grain han
dling. The test was made
with turn-around trains be
tween lowa points and the
Chicago ports. It was an un
qualified success, according
to railroad officials.
Allan S. Boyd, president of
_the railroad said that, “Its
'’’’Succ’ess gives an exciting
glimpse of possibilities for
economical equipping to han
dle the larger volumes of ex
port grain that seems to be in
our future.”
