Page 2-A IT/ VSfl| HOOTS WORKING TOGETHER lt is always a hopeful sign when people and organizations get together to work for mutual goals and this week I attended three very different meetings where cooperative effort was the underlying theme. The first meeting was the regular quarterly session of the Board of Trustees of the Pettigrew Regional Library' which was held in Columbia last Monday night. Three concerned citizens from each of the three counties served gy the regional library (Chowan, Tyrrell, and Washington) devote jnany hours and much thought to the affairs of the this public library system. Without this kind of community support, the library would never have reached the high level of public service which it tries to maintain. The second meeting was held in Manteo at the Dare County Public Library with Librarian Lida Olmstead as the gracious hostess. There were ten librarians present the directors of the four regional libraries in this area plus six members of their staffs and we spent a very productive morning exploring ways that we could co-operate across not just county lines but between library regions. The four regions represented were: Albemarle Bertie, Gates, Hertford and Northampton Counties. BH M Beaufort, Hyde and Martin Counties East Albemarle Currituck, Dare. Camden and Pasquotank Counties. Pettigrew Chowan, Tyrrell and Washington Counties. Louise Boone, Director of Albemarle Region, was the only one who came from her region, but she deserves extra credit since she came twice, arriving a day early the first time much to her embarassment. Mary Wilson of B-H-M was accompanied by Peepie Davenport of Beaufort County. Pettigrew was represented by Esther Davenport from Tyrrell County and Louise Darby from Chowan County in addition to myself. And the host region (East Albemarle) was well represented by the chairman for the day, Director Anne Sanders, Grace Austin of Currituck County, Elyse Irvin of Pasquotank-Camden County and our hostess. The third and last meeting for the week was a six-county RE-ELECT lames C. With the inspiring motto “All for one and one for all”, this association has been working for 38 years for the betterment of this area with particular emphasis on bridges and roads. The counties involved in this cooperative activity are Hyde, Tyrrell, Washington, Dare, Beaufort and Martin. The host this year was Martin County and next year it falls to Washington County to do the honors. SCREECHES NEGLECTED AREA The main speaker at the meeting held in Williamston was Attorney General Robert Morgan. He contrasted the roads in this part of the state with the highways in the other two-thirds and deplored the absence of plans for improvement in the current Highway Program. Particularly disappointing to the organization is the scrapping of the plan for a bridge across the Pamlico, their Number One Project. Tlje Attorney General challenged the group to continue to work for their goals and suggested that better medical service to added to their list of concerns. Folk Musical Rehearsal Ser All area youth in grades 7-12 are invited to participate in a Christian folk musical, “The True Vine”, written by John Allums, minister of music youth at Edenton Baptist Church. Allums has written over 300 songs and two folk musicals. Rehearsal begins October 28 and will run from 3 until 5 P.M. Date of the performance is December 9. Musical accompanists for the production will be Betsy Harrell I and Mary Sexton. “The True Vine”, with Biblical text for choir, piano, I guitar, and narrator, follows the I events leading from Genesis to I Revelation concerning the I scarlet thread” or the fact that I Jesus was God’s ultimate I revelation of Himself to’ man. 1 The name of the musical is I taken from John 15 where Jesus I said of Himself: “I am the true vine; you are the branches.” I ' A B^ 'swl" ISMBM ME RESERVE THE RIGHT TO UNIT QUAMIITKS wtioteFryers BUI »b» *4HIH p|cn|cs * PHI a; qc Cut Fryers lb. 43 c U W I 1 tutor’s tutor’s Signal Brmd “l"" J< E7 £ swlil B HKCTTmIH i Inliiii ii m I People Who Care About TneirTocoCort^hop^^^^pßßßß^ I Double Stamp Pay-TUESDAY-Donble Stamp Day Libby'/ Libby'/ | Libby” i§| JEXIS I SWEET Succotash * LIMA i 1 J ngn Jw^ PEAS • fey or *ue Isri paper I 4Cans DCANO LmJ TflUfFI C I 4Can * 4Caß * 4 tans sam ffig s|oo sj|oo T ? o s|oo sjoo $4.99 “Sj* « jjSj) S | I jyoo JJV >]oo 4f» I I 6-OZ CAMELLIA FROZEN I H^S* I pPI 11 m bCbC n Ibp O ILa Ska I I OOZ MORTON * jTOYi I JL Ini /Jr I PIE SHELLS 3 for sl.oo| E J®! r oil. j o * I I p I Local jnaps a ids ttv I IX3Z CHEF-BOY AR-OEE .
