The meeting was hastily called during a session Monday when the squad’s captain said he was resigning because the assignment has “been a bucket of worms.” In a brief monthly appearance to report on squad activities, Capt. Hank Weiss dropped the bombshell. He hinted at some discord within the squad, which has three units based at strategic locations in the county. “You can’t have a few people make a name for themselves at the expense of the squad,” he told the commissioners. “And it is not a new problem.” Saying his job as captain had . “been a bucket of worms”, . Capt. Weiss said: “I don’t want ._ to be a party to it any longer.” Commissioner N. J«-Gforge 'called for an ~executive session to discuss personnel. Chairman C. A. Phillips said since the captain had decided to resign as of December 15 an early meeting would be necessary. During the lengthy session, Commissioner Alton Elmore called for plans for & county manager to be included in the 1974 budget. Later George asked for accurate description of township lines and the numbering of the two commission seats in First Township. John Taylor appeared to re quest consideration of plans to provide more space at Shepard- Pruden Memorial Library. He said increased patronage and service made this necessary. Taylor said the second floor could be finished to provide storage and office space as well as further book stacks. “A lot of room up there is going to waste,” he noted. Chairman C. A. Phillips said his comments would be passed on to the library board. Jethro said tax listing would be from January 2 to February 2, including Saturday mornings. He proposed a land use schedule which the board adopted. The board also endorsed the Albemarle Detoxification Center for Chowan Hospital and pledged support. THE CHOWAN HERALD ■ HH? Two of their recent trips, in conjunction with their studies, have been visits to nearby farms. Mr. Copeland’s turkey farm was of high interest to the children. Imagine seeing thousands of turkeys at one time, feeding them and learning Social Services Report For Nov. Extensive payment of medical bills during November was reported to Chowan County commissioners Monday by the Department of Social Services. Included was a $39,379.57 payment for five persons hospitalized outside the county. Mrs. Hazel Elliott, acting director, reported also: Ten hospitalized in the county at a cost of $7,253.80 ; 26 out patient services, $372.71; physician services, $9,396.19 ; 20 dental services, $1,170.46; 150 physician service, $4,607.98 ; 22 nursing home cases, $8,979.37; nine optical services, $177.35; and eight mental health services, $l5O. The report also showed: Old Age Assistance: 53 cases; $4,016 grant; $75.77 average. Aid to Dependent Children: 78 cases, $8,959 grant. Aid to 'Disabled: 51 cases; $4,073 grant; s79.B6average. Automatic. l ross jewelers Edenton, N. C. Page 7-A Mr. Lamb, 64, Dies Suddenly William Caleb Lamb, 64, 903 North Oakum Street, died Thursday at his home. Death was attributed to a heart attack. A native of Perquimans County, Mr. Lamb was an aircraft mechanic at the Coast Guard Air Station in Elizabeth City. He was a son of Mrs. Ella B. Lamb and the late Charles B. Lamb. He was married to Mrs. Mildred Hollowell Lamb, who survives. In addition to his mother and wife, surviving are two sons: Stacey Lamb of High Point; and Roger Lamb of Rocky Mount; a brother, Horace Lee Lamb of Suffolk, Va.; and four grandchildren. He was a member of Edenton Baptist Church where funeral services were held at 3 P M. Saturday with Rev. Robert Gray in charge. Burial was in Beaver Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Robert Whiteman, Jack Barrow, Bill Elliott, Luther Parks, Leroy Haskett, Lindsey Barber, Guy Hobbs and John Oliver. Williford Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
