Page 2-A HOOTS LIBRARIES IN NEWS - The current issue of U. S. News & World Report has a long, well illustrated article on the new look in public libraries throughout the country but some of the material gathered for the survey was not used, as is usually the case. The introductory paragraphs include a reference to "circulating dress patterns” but the subject is never mentioned again, much to my disappointment, since the originator of this service is a North Carolina librarian and a friend of mine.' William Hess, the Director of the A-M-Y (Avery. Mitchell and Yancey Counties' Regional Library in tjie western part of the state has been building up this unique service for several years. I remember when he first mentioned it at a meeting of Western North Carolina Librarians (when I was working in the Public Library in Asheville) it was not exactly enthusiastically accepted since innovations are not always welcomed by all librarians. As time passed, the service and Bill Hess’s fame has grown with articles in several places. So, we were pleased when Bill told us at the regional directors meeting last month about the team of camera men and reporters from L. S. News & World Report who gathered information about him and his contribution to the broadening of library services. Too bad they didn’t use what they gleaned maybe later. 4§L Wne PRINTING - e//irry 2602 OCT 72 M.f. 34 $ S loc- . j» V 1. Our source for procuring the patterns to be circulated is from gifts by patrons who sew; thus the variety of sizes and styles is somewhat limited. Even so, it has proved a useful activity and continues to increase in popularity As word spreads, we will be able to expand our collection and thus build its value to the community. SCREECHES DWINDLING MEMBERS One of the first groups I met upon coming to Plymouth a little over three years ago was the organization which played a large part in the founding of the Washington County Library: the Thursday Afternoon Literary Club. Little by little, the membership has suffered losses which have decimated the ranks, especially of their charter members. Two very active members. both neighbors of mine, have moved out of town: Molly Trowbridge and "T” Ach. Death took Mary Cotton Davenport this year, a grievous loss since she was the life of tbe party whenever she attended. And now. the unexpected sudden death of Mrs. Isolind Ward leaves another void which can never be filled. She will be missed by the remaining members of the club as well as all her other friends.
