Mrs. Caroline Banks. Mrs.
Merysim Bancfa and Mrs. Mary
Nixon wrote a proposal entitled
Project CREATE (Career
Related Environmental
Activities Teaching the
Environment) and submitted it,
for possible funding, in
competition with those projects
from other school systems
across the state Needless to
say. it was one of the few
selected for full funding of

An innovative project, its
thrust is to improve the
academic performance, as well
as attitudes, of all pupils at
White Oak School in the basic
subject areas through
environmentally oriented
studies To accomplish these
objectives the staff at White
Oak School has worked
diligently to evolve an
environmental curriculum
which is geared to each
individual student.
To become even more
knowledgeable in the various
academic areas, the staff
members have undertaken a
rigorous weekly in-service
program with a science
consultant from the State
Department of Public
Instruction, as well as periodic
consultation from university
professors. These sessions have
resulted in teachers being more
knowledgeable and current in
their subject matter.
In addition, approximately 10
different community persons
with environmentally related
occupations are serving as
resource persons. Students
either visit these persons on the
job or these persons visit the
school and talk with students
ibout various environmental
matters. Naturally, the time
and talent of the resource
persons have done much to
insure the success of the
project.
To Lbtrtpftawm 1 -the above 1
cited activities, a nature trail
area has been built in a wooded
area on school property.
Assistance in this plan of the
project has been received by the
Soil Conservation Service
officials, foresters from
Weyerhauser Corporation, as
well as other consultants. An
outdoor classroom area is being
built by students at Chowan
*ltigh .School under the direction
of Everett White.
Actual field studies and
investigations are also being
conducted by pupils at a pond
provided by Eugene Jordan.
Within the school, pupils visit
a special investigation science
room and conduct actual
investigations under the
direction of Mrs. Laura
Hutchinson.
State education officials have
been extremely pleased with
the progress of the project and
have just made an additional
$2,000 grant to the school
system for use at White Oak
School on Project CREATE.
The success is due to many
factors, community persons
willing to help out. students
helping in nature trail
construction, and pond site

Area residents who waited too
late to enroll for Supplementary
Medical Insurance coverage
new have a naw chance to
obtain this important
protection. The Serial Security
Law had required that an
individual enroll for this part of
Medicare during ins inchvidual
enrollment poiad or oaring a
general enrollment period that
beoins no later than three years
after the end of his individual
enrollment period. This meant
that he had about three years
after age Go to enroll for this
part of medicare or he could aot
obtain this coverage at all. The
new law eliminates this time
limitation. Now an individual
may enroll during any
prescribed enrollment period.
There is a General
Enrollment Period during the
first three months of each year.
This means that those eligible
persons who previously chose
not to take Supplementary
Medical Insurance coverage
may now enroll during January.
February or March of 1974.
Their coverage would begin in
July, 1974. It is important to
enroll as soon as possible. The
longer a person waits, the
higher his premium will be. The'
premium is increased 10 per
