Local Sources of Financial Chowan Veterans Receive Funds SPECIAL TO THE HERALD NEW YORK - A number of World War veterans living in Chowan County will have their bankrolls enlarged this year by some Jll.dbO. That is the amount they will receive approximately, as their share of a $303,800,000 cash dividend to be distributed by the Veterans Administration. It will go to those World War veterans who have kept their GI insurance policies in force. This year’s dividend is the biggest ever declared, the VA states. It is larger than before because the interest earned by the trust funds governing the policies was unusually high in the past year. Participating in the distribution, nationally, will be nearly 138,000 World War I veterans who hold United States Government Life Insurance policies and 3,750,000 World War II vets who have National Service Life Insurance. Os the 590 veterans of the two World Wars residing in Chowan County, only about one-fourth ol them will be on the receiving end, the figures indicate. They are the ones who held on to their policies. Veterans of the Korean and Vietnam wars are covered by other kinds of insurance and will not share in this distribution. Os the 140 in the local area who do qualify, the one§ who were in World War I will receive an average of $156. Those who saw service in the second World War will get $75, on average. . THE CHOWAN HERALD Aid - Students are encouraged to keep in touch with their respective high school guidance counselors in order that they may be aware of the various kinds of scholarships granted by home town civic clubs, church groups or other nonprofit associations or foundations. Applicaiton forms for financial assistance can be obtained from a high school guidance counselor or the Financial Aid Office at College of The Albemarle. “Students wantng to apply should complete applications as soon as possible, while funds are still available,” advised Gary , Parsons, director of Student Financial Aid. “One out of three students receive some type of financial aid,” Parsons said, “In the past two years, no student that has had a justified finacial need has been turned away.” The actual amounts paid will be larger or smaller than these averages in individual cases since the dividends depend upon such variables as the size and type of the policy, the age of the recipient and the like. The SII,OOO that will be going to Chowan County vets will arrive, automatically, on the anniversary dates of their policies. No application is necessary. Many ex-servicemen in the local area and elsewhere will gain in other directions this year, the VA states. Under legislation enacted in December, 1973, about 2.400,000 veterans or their dependents who are receiving monthly benefits under two programs— the Veterans Pension Program and the Dependents Indemnity and Compensation Program will be getting a 10 per cent increase in their montly pensions, effective immediately. JOB CORPS INTERVIEW Hazel Tayloe, Job Corps counselor, will be interviewing in the office of Economic Resource Center on North Oakum Street during the morning hours of March 13. The Veterans Administration, which recently announced plans for a cardiovascular diagnostic and training center at its Allen Park hospital near Detroit, say specialized medical care facilites have been increased by almost 200 per cent since 1969. HOUSING NEEDED FOR 4.8 MILLION BROILERS... Sounds like an awful lof of broiler houses but actually it's 300. Already 10% of the growers needed to build this number of houses here in northeast North Carolina have broilers in or have houses under construction. The heavy demand for Perdue broilers in northeast markets is the reason for Perdue expansion locally. Perdue spent in excess of $1 million promoting its dressed broilers in major metropolitan areas in 73 and this amount will be increased in 74. Perdue has 15% of the New York City broiler market, 15% of the Boston-Providence market and 7% of the Philadelphia. PERDUE IS THE BRAND CHICKEN WHICH SHOPPERS ARE WILLING TO PAY A PREMIUM FOR AND THIS IS THE REASON PERDUE CAN GUARANTEE MORE TO GET CHICKENS GROWN THAN OTHER NORTH CAROLINA BROILER COMPANIES. JUST CALL AHOSKIE 332-5246 OR ROANOKE RAPIDS 537-5029 TO GET A PERDUE REPRESENTATIVE TO VISIT YOU AND EXPLAIN THE PERDUE BROILER CONTRACT.
