S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has appointed 12 members and 12 alternates to the Southeastern Potato Committee. The appointees were selected from nominations made by potato growers and handlers in North Carolina and Virginia. The 12-member committee recommends regulations to be issued under the marketing order for Irish potatoes grown in designated counties of eastern North Carolina and Virginia. The producer members and their alternates will serve through March 31, 1975. The purpose of the marketing order, according to USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service, is to provide—in the interests of producers and consumers—orderly marketing of uniform quality potatoes throughout the marketing" season. North Carolina potato producers named to the committee are Maurice K Berry and Reuben C. James of Elizabeth City, and R. Neal Campen and Kerney A. Merrill, Jr., of Beaufort. Their alternates are Eddie C. Bell of Belcross, Clay Ferebee, 111, of Camden, Thomas J. Adams of Beaufort and Odell Austin of Aurora. North Carolina potato handlers named are George M. These numbers indi cate the percentage content of the three most important plant nutrients: nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium m that order. If you have a garden with poor or exhausted soil it is generally a good idea to obtain a soil analysis from your local state university to find out the nutri ents it lacks, then buy a ferti lizer that gives you the correct percentages to put your soil back in balance. One of the most important jobs when starting a new gar den .is soil preparation. Deep digging is essential, plus the re moval of stones and weed roots. A soil conditioner may also be necessary, such as garden peat, manure or compost. Only when you have a good crumbly, well drained soil can you expect worthwhile results, and create the best possible conditions for good fertilizers and good plants to do their job. The most common disease with zinnias is mildew, a pow dery white fungus which dis colors the foliage in summer. Certain kinds of zinnias are mildew-resistant, and it’s a good policy to check descriptions to find those varieties which are claimed to be resistant. There are also fungicidal sprays and dusts which can be used on zin nias to keep the disease in check. Another deterant is to change the location of zinnia plantings each year. Here we go again. Douglas of Lenoir, in Caldwell County, has filed for the position of resident Superior Court Judge from the 25th Judicial District. He is the only Republican who has announced for the position. The judgeship was created earlier this month by the General Assembly which established a second resident Judge for the 25th District. The district includes Burke, Catawba and Caldwell counties.
