There are ’ only fifteen of us in the state, but - t> we represent almost half the '£ counties (47 out of 100) so our opinions seem to carry a bit of weight. Our quarterly meetings are always productive since the k group is so compatible, our ic problems are so similar, and our desire to be mutually beneficial Hi is so universal. The subjects for this meeting included a thorough discussion :< of the implications of the new Library Law and we had the ( author of the bill, Joe Farrell of > the Institute.of Government, as ; the very helpful expert to guide !us. In addition, two representatives of the State’s • Local Government Commission | in Raleigh explained the | changes in accounting methods • which are indicated by our new 1 status as a “Public Authority". Thanks to the excellent i guidance of the Assistant State Librarian, Elaine von Oesen, and the State Library Auditor, Ryland Johnson, the ensuing discussion resulted in an | agreement to investigate these CALL ME! SCREECHES HECTIC MONTH-This March is setting some kind of a record for scheduling conferences, it seems, since my calendar includes a trip each week this month. Two weeks ago it was a Children’s Literature Conference in New Bern, last week the Regional Directors’ Meeting in Burlington, this week is the Young Adult Conference at Quail Roost (near Durham) and the last week in the month contains the annual Trustee- Librarian Conference in Chapel Hill as well as our own Staff Meeting in Columbia. Louise Darby, Chowan County Librarian at Shepard- Pruden Memorial Library in Edenton, is broadening our horizons and providing representation for the Region at the Conference for Art Councils this week (I hope I have that name right). So we'll both be burning the midnight oil and working week-ends, probably,to stay caught up on the regular activities. The most exciting extra activity has been the preparation for the first meeting of the Board of Directors for the Bicentennial Barge Foundation. We invited as guests a large group of people who have been interested and helpful in the early stages of the feasibility study now under way. The generous help of the Weyerhaeuser Company has made the planning for this meeting a genuine pleasure and I'd like* to thank expecially Keith Lamb, Jeffrey Dick, Sonny McLawhorn. Flora Brown, Peggy Modlin and Bailey Phelps for their valuable assistance. Also, ihis is a good time to acknowledge the consistent encouragement and very necessary legal aid of my co-incorporator, Bob Hutchins, and his most efficient office staff. L.
