Page 2-A • ~ , ,) ; ?■!■ -i ' ■ ■■■. ’r ~*. r < ~ ZZ-- ■■: Recreation Update CHESS TOURNAMENT ' The Recreation Department is sponsoring an Adult Chess Tournament (16 and over) for interested persons in Chowan County on Monday night April 22. at 6:30 P.M. at the Edenton National Guard Armory. There will be a SI.OO entry fee. Interested persons may pre register at the National Guard Armory any afternoon from 1:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. Trophies will be given to the winner and runner-up and ribbons to the top three finishers. Pre-registration is encouraged but last minute entries will be taken until starting time. TABLE TENNIS TOURNAMENT The Table Tennis Tournament sponosred by the Edenton Recreation Department proved to be a success. There were 12 entries in this double elimination match (day tournament. It was a lot of SPEAKERS- Walter Cron kite. toj left. Columbiai Broadcasting System commentator, will be one of four speakers to be featured at the annual convention of the N. C. Merchants Association to be held in Charlotte, on May 26-27. Others are. top right. Mike Pekarek, with National Cash Register, Dayton Ohio; Atty. Gen. Robert Morgan, lower left; and Ralph Breshears. president of American Travel Corporation, Raleigh, lower right. FINAL. PLANT TREES Many areas of cut over land and poor crop land could be put back into productivity by planting them in pine trees. Some of the species suited for plant ing in North Carolina are loblolly, slash and long leaf. The longleaf is best suited for growth on dry Sandhill sites. The loblolly and slash can be planted on “average” upland sites out of the Sandhills. The application seeks a grant of 5105,000.00 from funds allocated for use In Chowan County and $655,500.00 from funds allocated for Statewide use. This grant would be applied as a portion of the construction cost of a water supply system prolect. The prolect consists of construction of 4 deep wells, 3 water treatment plants, 3 elevated water storage tanks and a distribution system ot 10, (, 6 and 4 Inch water meins with tire hydrants and meters.
